When Did Feminism Become So Embarrassing?

I read the article. I accept her right to believe as she does. She is not anti-sex Darla... she simply views sex differently than you. But thanks for providing a good example of why the feminists of today are seen as embarrassments. You don't think women should be allowed to have their own opinions and views. You think they should all see things just as you do.

If you read the article why did you try and claim I was calling her anti-sex because of her anti-choice views? I clearly separated the two out. I don't think you did read the article.

I said nothing about her not being permitted to have her own views. IN fact she is the one shaming and mocking and belittling other women for having views that differ from her own. Again I would urge you to read the article.

What I said is that I find her views to be anti-sex. I still do.

So back when women were kept out of the workforce and there were no women CEO's women didn't work hard? Of course they did, and of course the feminist movement changed oppressive practices in this country and enabled women to compete on a more level playing field (though of course it has still not been completely leveled).

I see you didn't read your own article. The reason i call her anti-sex is because of statements like these:

I believe that casual sex is destructive, not empowering

I also generally shy away from celebrations of meaningless vulgarity, which, sadly, seems to be the leading theme in both Moran’s book and in the gigantic, flaming, multi-car pileup that is modern-day feminism. In “How to Be a Woman,” it’s OK to be a “slag” or a “slut,” as long as we’re “simply being honest about who we really are.” In interviews, Moran expresses approval for the recent rash of mortifying “Slut Walks,” in which young women strut down the street in ill-fitting, body-baring “clothing” in order to prove that they are empowered, not sexual objects. Which totally makes sense, if you’re crazy.

When it comes down to it, whether addressing abortion, sex, or any otherwise self-indulgent behavior, the message of “How to be a Woman” is this: “If it feels good, do it.”

It’s quite telling that one of Moran’s “heroes,” the recipient of several glowing pages in “How to Be a Woman,” is the pop singer Lady Gaga. If you listen to Moran, Lady Gaga is a feminine hero for our time, breaking boundaries, creating new social spaces, clearing the way for young people to cast off the shackles of oppression. Of course, if you’re really paying attention, you’ll notice that Lady Gaga is an updated Madonna clone in a meat dress, desperate to shock, mistaking vulgarity for creativity: the musical equivalent of an old, dying system’s last gasp.

No wonder certain feminists are getting so wound up. They have reason to be worried. Something new is out there—conservatism, decorum, chastity, and respect are downright radical these days—but it’s not poor Gaga.

One of the things I have always found amusing is the women who rant against porn but subscribe to Cosmo. Now I am not defending porn. But Cosmo has done more to ruin women's self image than Linda Lovelace or whoever is the reigning porn queen, could have possibly done.

She is entitled to view sex as she wishes. Just as you are. If she wishes to be chaste, I will respect that. If she wishes to run around and sleep with anyone and everyone, she has that choice too. I would respect that as well. Unlike you, I respect people's rights to determine for themselves what is right for them.

Yes she is entitled to do that. She is also entitled to write an article mocking women who choose to do otherwise. And I am entitled to comment on that article.

I think the feminism movement fell prey to the same thing that so many social movements have. There are extremists who write or say outlandish things, and the media or the haters make sure that nonsense gets the press.

Who was that woman that wrote about marriage being an institution of slavery and rape? I forget her name, but she certainly got the press.

Just like PETA. It started out as a great idea to try and stop cruelty to animals, and was hijacked by the lunatic fringe.

at one time it was.

at one time you were owned by your hubby.

Even then not all men treated their wives like the laws suggested

A highly debatable claim.

I do not read Cosmo nor do I view porn so this really has nothing to do with me either way.

Again, is she not entitled to her beliefs of what a 'strong woman' looks and acts like? According to you she is not. Strength is not determined by how outrageous or shocking you can be. Strength is believing in yourself... not in shocking others. Tell us, what does dressing like the above prove? Does it say 'I am a leader'? Does it say 'I am strong'?

Dressing like the above references the slutwalk movement, something she has completely mischaracterized by claiming that it's about dressing like a slut to prove that women are not sexual objects. She appears to be highly ignorant or a liar. I think she's probably a liar. But I am willing to listen to arguments for her ignorance.

Slut walk was a grass roots movement that rose up after some police officers, I believe in Canada? instructed women to stop dressing like sluts in order to prevent rape.

Do you need more details on this?

Indeed it was. But when this woman wrote the article, it certainly wasn't. And it isn't now.

That doesn't change the fact that women today have feminism to thank for many of the freedoms and opportunities they take for granted.

Would there be anything controversial about stating that black people have the civil rights leaders and movement to thank for some opportunities they have today?

A highly debatable claim.

I do not read Cosmo nor do I view porn so this really has nothing to do with me either way.

I am mainly referring to the air-brushed, retouched pictures of models. The overwhelming push for all women to look anorexic. The same effect that the barbi doll had on girls.

Good men with hearts full of fairness have always exsisted.

Just like shitty women who still use the tactics that were used by women back when being a bitch to men was all a girl had to control her world still exsist.

I say fuck those women and the man they rode in on.

Some men are still attracked to those women because they are also stuck in a spiral of unfairness.

I constantly find myself having more in common with the young women of today because they are being truely free due to the shackles being cut.

This current genration women I see arround me are owning that fairness that was once impossible.

Mark my words this world will be better off when half of the power that exsists is in their hands

Women like Oprah and Martha Stewart and many others built from the ground up their own empires. To pretend it was due to feminism is just nonsense.

and women like lucy ball paved their way.

when she was in the business the ony character wshe could make good money off of was playing the brain addled house wife.

Just think of the funny shit she NEVER got to do because she had and inny and not an outy

They could not have done so before the feminist movement. Before feminism they couldn't even vote. Again there's nothing debatable about this but if you want to make a fool of yourself feel free.

Yeah. I am already stunned at some of the things my niece says just in conversation. They are definitely different than my generation. I love it.

they kick ass.

I sometimes wish my teenaged self could see just how much better it would be now.

There is still a ways to go but damn these girls are making me proud.

thank you Gloria Stienum sorry for misspelling your name

To have half the power women would have to have half the money. Unless you believe that you can emulate Opera Wine-free or Old Ma Thastuart you are in the same position as most men. Yes, equal and, for the most part, powerless. A woman must get her power from being a woman, a man gets his from being a man. The fight should not be between the sexes it should be between the classes.

I read a story that Carol Burnette told about Lucille Ball. Apparently, just after Lucy divorced "The cuban", as she called him, she went into the studio to start her new show, and the script was terrible. Desi had always handled those things and Lucy was not known for being a tough boss. She told carol that she had everyone break for lunch and went into her office and thought about it all. After lunch she came out and straightened everything out like a professional. I love the line that she told Carol Burnette. "Kid, that was when the put the 's' on the end of my name."

we all get our power from being human.

both inny and outy people.

the facts are that women are gaining power.

gander arround you.

We have female heads of states at a much higher rate.

the good thing for mankind is women have fewer sociopaths amoung their ranks.

It makes it harder for women to gain power but will make them better leaders.

you see sociopaths spend every minute of their day thinking about how to gain more power and get what they want.

Not all sociapaths chose an evil path.

But the world we have designed so far give sociopaths a leg up.

Those who are willing to DO ANYTHING to gain more power and wealth are repayed at a better rate than those who look at a situation and say "Im not fucking doing that to people for more money and power".
