Obama Wins The Gold For Worst Economic Recovery Ever

I was young but my recollection was many Democrats hated Reagan. Not sure how that doesn't qualify as being split. I just finished reading Robert Caro's forth book on LBJ and it spoke of the Democratic controlled Congress in the early '60's under JFK and LBJ and how split that was and how difficult it was to get things done. You are just making excuses. This country has been plenty divided in its past.
Oh lord yes. It's nothing now compared to the 1850's/1860's.

BTW, when you coming to Columbus and standing me a beer? I could use a good excuse to visit the Elevator Brewing company.

Ha! It's too bad we missed each other when I was there last. The relatives in Columbus are all flying out here (SF) in a couple of weeks for the wedding. Not sure when I'll make it back but when I do I definitely owe you one.

McConnell's statement was shocking because a politician actually spoke the truth. For example when Bush Jr. became President in '01 do you think the Democrats and the DNC got together and said 'let's work to make Bush a two-term President?' Of course not. They're also not as dumb as McConnell to state so publicly. But the Republicans deciding they don't want to 'work with' Obama in no way guarantees that he will not win re-election or that Republicans in Congress will hold onto their seats. If voters like Obama's agenda he will get re-elected and Republicans in Congress will lose seats this fall.

I will say 'taking care of the nation's business' means more than just passing what Obama proposes. And in reality when has Obama ever shown he can work in a 'bi-partisan fashion'? Admittedly I'm not all that familiar with his time in the Ill state legislature so if someone wants to show me bi-partisan work he did there I'm open. His time in the Senate? Any major bi-partisan work there?

Clinton showed he could pass bi-partisan legislation. Reagan worked with a Democratic legislature in California while Governor as well as while President. He never had a majority Republican Congress to work with like Obama did his first two years. Nothing is all Obama's fault but he is not a poor victim here.

i have no doubt that each party does not want an opposition president to be elected to a second term, however, how do explain the marked increase in the use of the filibuster (greater than at any other point in history)

it reached the point where it takes a 60 vote majority for the dems to pass any non-tax legislation in 2010 and then it has to go through the house and the house has routinely killed all such legislation - why do you think that we have not had anything but stop gap budgets

obama tried to compromise with the repugs and got told to do it our way or the highway by the repugs

so, yes i do blame the repugs - the word compromise is not in their vocabulary

A few words on the Reagan recovery and compared to Obama. Reagan had both fiscal and monetary policy promoting full employment and economic growth. Obama has neither at this point. Under the circumstances, it shouldn't be too shocking that the economy recovered at a fast clip under Reagan than it is recovering now.

No you didn't. You said "it's in the article" If it's in the article then you should be able to point out the two recessions because it's not in the article you posted.

According to the accepted arbiter of the economy's ups and downs, the National Bureau for Economic Research, a brief recession in 1980 -- lasting only six months -- and a short period of growth, were followed by a sustained recession from July 1981 to November 1982

Reagan didn't take office until 1981 so unless your argument is the announcement of him running for the Presidency is what caused the recession it's pretty hard to stick him with responsibility for a recession in 1980.
