The question no one dares ask

they will NOT be able to contain these people who just rose up and fought for their freedoms.

guess what they will get if they try to smother these people with a new form of government?

Their government will now FEAR the people as it should be

How do you oppress a people who NOW KNOW their power?

No government will be able to oppress them again

The question no one dares to ask:

What if we are wrong about Syria?

We watched and cheered Egypt at the overthrow of Mubarrak. Now there is an Islamist regime and whether it is a friendly Islamist regime or not the situation might be very temporary. The intention is to introduce Sharia law in Egypt and, it goes without saying, that whatever words they use, they will see the west as their enemy in time.

Is that what we wanted when we cheered the rebels on?

The same thing happened in Libya. We debated the wisdom of involvement and came down on the side of the rebels. Those rebels are now an Islamist leaning government. Islamists want a world of Islam. History shows Islam to position itself as an enemy of the west.

Note: Islamists do NOT include all Muslims the majority of whom are peaceable and, within, certain parameters, assimilate into their adoptive society.

Now cast your mind back to N. Ireland. Remember how Americans were played for fools by the IRA who appealed to the image of the poor downtrodden, exploited citizens. Memories of the potato famine to the strains of Danny Boy? Now you know, I hope, that that little tale was almost totally false. Their words, used for war at home, played the gullible in America as simply as Menuhin played his fiddle.

So Syria. Those poor rebels. Those poor people being shot and bombed by that evil president supported by the nasty Russians and the evil Chinese.

I'll ask again. What if we are wrong? What if, in a years time, in five or ten years time, we are faced not with an Arab spring but with an Islamist assault from all corners of the mediteranean? What if we discover that the propaganda we are fed daily is exactly that. What if our leaders, so intent on creating an outside enemy to take the heat off the enemy within, have got it wrong?

Mubarrak, Ghaddaffi, Assad may not have been the sort of people you took home to tea but for decades they kept the lid on a pot that might well contain a bubbling, toxic mix that proves impossible to live with in the future.

Now I'll sit back and wait for the experts to extract their little factlets and by slow demolition prove me wrong. That's OK. It's tea time anyway.
What if this is all intentional? What if the powers that be are setting the stage for total annihilation of their Jewish brethren in Israel? Have you considered that?

This was YOUR topic, not mine. IF you want to understand what is going on, you should look up "Islamic Caliphate" and do some research.

I would do this for you, but you believe I am a hack who just loves Bush, hates brown people, and is incapable of telling the truth. It will be much more effective if you do the research yourself, and discover this on your own. What you're going to find, will amaze you, and it dovetails nicely with your OP.

OK, I did.
There is a problem to this sort of research and it is this. The people who write blogs and who use the internet to promote their ideas are very often following minority views or views based upon stereotypes.
I could have launched into an anti Islamist tirade or I could have appeared like a dove of peace and preached tolerance to all. I didn't. I asked a question. A straight question and I expected people to tear me down because of it. This thread has not, thus far, degenerated into a name calling childish willy waving contest (yet) but has elicited quiet opinions. that is good. I do not intend to sit as judge and jury but I will read those opinions that retain a modicum of unbiased sense. Even from you, you old bugger.
We are so preconditioned to support what someone called the underdog we seldom ask ourselves who the underdog actually is. I have called Americans the most gullible people on the face of the planet but on this occasion I think everyone is equally gullible - it's the easy way and leaves time for burgers and chips.

Yes, and I am SURE the radical regimes will abide by fair and accountable democratic elections!

You people amaze me sometimes... It's as if you think everyone on this planet wakes up to the same exact reality you have in America! That everyone has freedom and democracy, and whenever they don't like something, they can voice their displeasure at the ballot box. I would venture to say, most people living in this situation have never even seen a ballot box.
Yea that was true in Alabama for a long time till Johnson signed the 1964 Civil Rights Act.

when a people fight back against a government that is keeping them for freedom of choice I will cheer.

Freedom is what will save the world.

None of these countries can get anywhere in this world without the internet.

Trust the minds of human beings to being able to decide for themselves how they will live.

The youth will take them down if they try to imprison them in a world of hate.

That is what has happened already to these countries.

The CIA is what happened to those three countries.

The US/CIA is in bed with Al Queda to undermine the ME.

That's less of a question that no one dare ask as it is a truth that no one dare face.

I appreciate your commitment to civility, and you will note that I have not responded with name-calling in this discussion. I haven't launched into any kind of tirade, I simply asked you to Google "Islamic Caliphate" and research it for yourself. Now you want to claim you did this, but the problem is you can't really tell what is propaganda and what is the truth, because every side has their blog, or whatever. But here's the thing... The idea of Islamic Caliphate dates back to the death of Muhammad. This is CENTURIES old. It didn't come about as a result of social media, and it isn't just something people trumped up to bash Muslims with, these people have fought brutal wars and killed millions of people in their attempts to establish an Islamic Caliphate, and they won't stop until they do so.

Make no mistake, the "underdogs" here are radical Islamic extremists who hope to establish a Caliphate. So far, you are absolutely correct, the Left continues to cheer the underdogs on in every victory, as if they are fighting for freedom, liberty and independence. It's stunning to me. These people have no intention of living in a civilized western-style democratic world. Our principles of freedom, liberty and independence are not tolerated in their culture, it is forbidden. THAT is their fundamental problem with us! We don't want to conform to 5th Century Islamic law, and therefore, we are Infidels. We have to be killed.

You've been a disappointment bac.....what happened to the thinking, tough, skeptic you used to be....
You've become a loony pinhead.....brainwashed nut that spouts the most ridiculous and far fetched bullshit I've heard in months....
Its like you've become a member of some anti-American idiot cult filling you empty skull full of nutty conspiracies....

I stand 100% in support of my Arab brothers and sisters. If they so choose to install a theocracy, that's their choice. But if that's the case, it would be wise for such leaders to remember the conditions that so installed them to begin with.

I started this thread and here I close it. Thank you for your opinions but once we get mentions of Obama, Liberals, Republicans etc, the thread is ruined. It had to happen. No probs.
End.

From the American corpus the following collocates of the phrase 'black + man'

GRAPES CHRIS OBAMA BORN PLAYING READY SOUTH FRONT LINE AM SEEN SMALL ONCE

Grapes is a bit wierd. I guess it is from black grapes. Chris? Maybe Chris Rock? But the Obama and born, interesting. Later 'south' and 'small' appear to have become negative words.
We can, by this method, begin to see how the codes used for race develop.
