An oil tanker collided with a U.S. Navy destroyer near the Strait of Hormuz on Sunday but no one was hurt and shipping traffic in the waterway, through which 40 percent of the world's seaborne oil exports pass, was not affected, officials said.

"Both vessels are okay and the Strait of Hormuz is not closed, and business is as usual there," an Oman coast guard official told Reuters, declining to be named under briefing rules.

The collision nevertheless left a gaping hole in the starboard side of USS Porter, a guided-missile destroyer suffered, but no one was injured on either vessel, the U.S. Navy said in a statement. The collision with the Panamanian-flagged bulk oil tanker M/V Otowasan occurred at approximately 1 a.m. local time.

OMG... Should we declare a ban on Navy destroyers? What if it had hit a child or innocent gay person?

Or worse... An innocent unmarried, yet committed, gay person who was only seeking to help the Muslim Brotherhood overcome their Jewish problem so they can be free to execute gay people...

The Straits of Hormuz are over 20 miles wide!

not all of those waters are navigable due the shallowness of portions of the strait...depending on the draft of the vessels concerned

still, the captain and the officer of the watch of the destroyer will likely be court martialed

oh well

The Straits follow a Traffic Separation Scheme (TSS) where the outgoing and incoming ships are in lanes two miles wide separated by a two mile wide avoidance lane.

the article did not say which vessel was out of its lane

still, the destroyer likely being the more maneuverable ship should have been able to avoid the tanker, unless the tanker was trying to ram the destroyer...

Probably a ship run operated by BP

I'm sure it is Bush's fault. Obama inherited that Navy.
Still can't handle that your messiah was a total fuck up can you? The pain will ease with time Damo. Given a few more years of a Democrat in the White House and you won't have to worry about being embarrassed when it's brought up that Bush was the second coming of Warren G. Harding as everyone will have forgotten him by then.
