Two days after formally selecting Ryan to complete the GOP ticket, Romney publicly praised his running mate’s work as necessary to protect the long-term survival of Medicare, the government-run health insurance program for the elderly.

Ryan has “come up with ideas that are very different than the president’s,” Romney said in Florida, the state with the highest percentage of residents age 65 and over. “The president’s idea for Medicare was to cut it by $700 billion. That’s not the right answer. We want to make sure that we preserve and protect Medicare.”

Romney did not say so, but the plans Ryan produced in the past two years as chairman of the House Budget Committee retain the $700 billion in Medicare cuts even as they call for the repeal of Obama’s health care plan.

Romney said there may be differences between his own budget plan and Ryan’s, but he refused to detail them.

It's typical of the Repubs. They are determined to undermine social programs just like the Bush idea of privatizing part of SS. What continues to baffle me is all the social programs were private or discretionary to begin with and it appears some folks can't grasp that. That set-up didn't work so the government had to step in. People had their own "retirement plan" for thousands of years and many were left destitute in their old age.

The Repubs want the same thing concerning Medicare. They keep talking about "choice" when the choice is dependent on the money a person has. There is no "choice". A person doesn't choose to be uninsured if they can afford insurance unless they're nuts or Republican....but I'm repeating myself.

What $7 Billion in cuts...no benefits have been changed. Ryan would take all the savings and give them to the 1%. They have stated they want to kill everything that benefits people and they believe that progressive policy is a cancer. How fucking ignorant does someone have to be to believe something like that? Yet he considers himself a xtian...it's pathological.

Romney, visiting Ohio on the final day of a four-day tour of electoral battleground states, is working to define and defend his position on Medicare before the Democratic narrative can take hold.

He says the Republican push to revamp Medicare would offer greater choice and opportunity to future retirees, while charging that Obama is weakening the program with cuts.

“I can’t tell you about the politics of something like the Medicare issue, but I can tell you about the truth, and the truth is we simply cannot continue to pretend that a Medicare on track to become bankrupt at some point is acceptable,” Romney told reporters yesterday in Miami, Florida.

The state is home to the nation’s largest population of seniors.
