Why carry a gun?

I had no idea that you had examined the genitalia of many gun owners. I guess everyone needs a hobby.
 
the reason most logical people carry a gun is because they realize that cops can't be everywhere, that there are people intent on being evil and hurting people, that police have no duty or obligation to provide you protection as an individual, that you and you alone are responsible for your safety, and that a gun is the most efficient and effective tool for self defense.

There is an additional factor, and that is one of being able to help other people. Alone and unarmed I likely wouldn't stop to help a stranded motorist, stop a fight, or try to rescue someone (depending on the situation of course). But if I can be reasonably sure of being able to help, I will certainly stop and help.

Not a very nice place to live then. It is ten past ten in the morning here. I can almost (almost because nothing is 100% certain) guarantee that there will be no threats to my person or to that of any of my family, all of whom have gone, or will go about their business. My grandchildren will be out in the town, after their obligatory revision, where they will meet with friends, visit a restaurant for lunch, go window shopping and travel home on public transport alone this evening. It is also unlikely that they will see a policeman during their travels apart from the ones who sometimes stand at zebra crossings to reduce jaywalking.
Why should anyone who lives in a civilised society be frightened ALL the time to the extent of having to carry a gun? It is beyond me.

There probably are but I have not heard of any. We do have the occasional pickpocket and the occasional shop robbery. The only violence I have ever seen in the street was about six or seven years ago when I looked towards shouting and saw an old lady chase a man out of a small shop beating him with an umbrella.
Most people, myself included, found it a great piece of spontaneous entertainment.
Oh, and pre 1997 British squaddies would occasionally face up to american sailors in the red light district. That was a bit of fun too. Mostly though people are too busy to fight and get into trouble.

Like you I know little in the scheme of things. I do not understand quantum mechanics for example. But I am entitled to express an opinion with which several people often agree.
We learn by talking to people and by being open to communications of all types. The vast majority of communications are intentional. Therefore if I have surmised that you live in a rather violent society it is because of the export of information from that very society.
So, dont criticise me, criticise the people who broadcast to the world. Mostly, it must be said, marketers and politicians with the most recent prize being awarded to your own, your very own, Mitt (the tit) Romney.

the difference is that I'm not the one trying to say we don't live in a violent society or world. I fully acknowledge the existence of our violent society and my responsibility to protect myself from it. You, on the other hand, appear to be blaming our entire realm of violent society on just those who would own or recommend guns, which is highly illogical.

You have to remember that he's from the Once Great Britian, where it's against the law to defend yourself; no matter what.
