Is Obama taking black vote for granted?

Washington (CNN) -- Some African-Americans have watched enviously as President Barack Obama courted other voting blocs critical to his re-election hopes.

The president pushed for repeal of the "don't ask, don't tell" law that barred gays from serving openly in the military and endorsed same-sex marriage; he helped push through fair pay for women; he supported the DREAM Act, which provided a path to citizenship for young adults in the U.S. illegally; he said his administration would stop deporting young illegal immigrants who entered the country as children provided they meet certain requirements.

Given that an overwhelming number of African-Americans consistently support Obama, some have openly wondered if the nation's first African-American president is taking them for granted. And if he is, is that a risk he can afford to take.

The answer appears to be yes.

Obama won 95% of the black vote in 2008, and polls show he enjoys 87% support among black registered voters versus 5% for Republican rival Mitt Romney.

"Well, I think, he can afford to take black voters for granted," said Fredrick Harris, a professor of political science at Columbia University and director of its Institute for Research in African-American Studies. "No other constituency gives that large a percentage of its vote to the Democratic Party," Harris said, adding that blacks have earned a place as the Democrats' "most loyal constituency."

so much for that zero percent notion.....

African-Americans supported Bill Clinton with 84% of their votes .. then supported Al Gore with 90% of their votes .. then supported John Kerry with 88% of their votes.

Democrats know the Republican Party gives blacks ZERO reason to vote for them. None whatsoever.

So, whether the democratic candidate is black or white, they can expect the majority of African-American votes.

Yep. They can stay on their plantation. Guess they still like to be enslaved by white democrats.

Funny thing is that the GOP doesn't need them to win elections

:0) What's even funnier dickhead is that Obama is the president .. AND, your boy hasn't lead the national polls even once in spite of the failures of Obama.

Funny thing is, he didn't need you or any of your moron posse to become the president.

:0) That's funny.

There's nothing funny about people like GED'sRStubborn.

As long as he keeps sending the checks, the slaves will do as the master says and vote for him

How about that?

Here we see a bunch of hateful Righties derailing a thread with their standard BS, and NOWHERE is Yurt saying word one about it.

Don't worry they will still get their carton of cigarettes to go vote

It's a damn shame that Yurt refuses to police threads that have been derailed by a fellow Rightie with the same vociferous outrage he reserves for Liberals!

Actually, that's just Yurt being his douchey, two-faced self...

Obama has every reason to take the black vote for granted in the sense that he will get a very high percentage of it. The issue for him is one of turnout. Will he get blacks to the polls in the same number, or greater, than in '08?

No, he will not. Obama doesn't care about them.

But he does care about latinos and women .. at least where their vote is concerned .. and republicans have gone out of their way to energize hispanics and women for Obama.

I believe President Barack Hussein does care about the Black vote and my White one as well. I don't believe the white candidate cares for MY particular vote one whit. In fact, I believe he will harm me and my present station in life if he prevails in November which I also believe he will not.

Obama doesn't give a rats ass about black people .. not just African-Americans .. black people anywhere we are found.

SEE: Libya

Are you aware that Obama is droning drought-stricken Somalia?

Are you aware that the US is now at war throughout Africa?

Did you know that George Bush had a better African policy than Obama?

I've been in several conversations recently with blacks and a group of black people about this subject. None of the enthusiasm from 2008 remains.

Obama does not share our history and does not respect the era of civil rights beyond lip service.

"Take off your bedroom slippers"

If Romney had said that, Obama's supporters would have called it racism.

Did he tell the hispanins to "Stop whining, grumbling, and crying?"

I definitely don't know much about the black vote, but I do know about me. A white woman who was seriously very down on obama for many reasons. At this point I am very enthusiastic about voting for him, something I did not think would or could happen this time around. Because I feel literally under attack from the right, as if they won't be happy until I'm in a Burqa, or forced to bear my rapist's child and then FORCED TO GIVE THE RAPIST VISITATION RIGHTS, maybe have him over for fucking tea, or maybe it won't be long now that they have come out for forcing us to give birth and forcing visitation rights on us, they will just take a page out of the Taliban book and force us to marry our rapists.

So yeah, I would say the R's have riled up the women alright. It's a sad day when you have to be grateful and jump to vote for a man just because he came out, unprovoked, and stated that rape is rape and we don't need to be parsing rape and men don't need to be making laws about women's health. But that day is here.

Sounds like you are a little piggy suckling at the gobblement teat wanting you fellow citizens to support you. What a lowlife you are

I am certainly familiar with your certain breed of whining crying, self-defeatism, BAC. Thank goodness the vast majority of Black people don't share your sentiments. While I may agree that Black participation at the polling stations will not be as enthusiastic as in 2008 it will be nonetheless representative of the Black community at large. I just can't be concerned about wars like you as I am a veteran of many of them myself. Until just a few years ago when duty called me I answered faithfully and patriotically. I've grown a lot since then but I continue to put aspirations of the country above my own. I'm not in that particular scene anymore and I allow the military leaders and the politico's to operate overtly or covertly as they seem to see fit. I've never had a utopian government or military and I don't see one happening anytime soon.

I feel you good sister.

Libya was the absolute rock-bottom line for me.

Such an atrocity, so much ungodly suffering .. and nobody bore the brunt of that horror as much as those with black skin.

That being said, I do respect your decision.

I have to say I commend your honesty on this issue. Yes, I was aware of all of those issues, but your run of the mill liberal is not because they are not told such things on PMSNBC or Huffing and Puffington Post or Daily Kooz.

However, your commitment to principle is commendable and I give you kudos.

I don't expect any of the left wing Obama sycophants to join you as they are either ignorant of these facts, will spin them away or just blame Bush.
