Republican vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan says he didn't run a marathon in less than three hours as he claimed in a nationally broadcast interview.
The candidate acknowledged Saturday he had misstated his marathon time by more than an hour.
He released a statement correcting the record after Runner's World magazine found evidence he had completed one marathon and finished in just over four hours.
Ryan told radio host Hugh Hewitt last month he had run a "two hour and fifty-something" marathon. That's a pace of less than 7 minutes per mile for the 26.2 mile course - extremely fast for recreational runners.
A marathon time of 4 hours and one minute is equivalent to a pace of 9:12 per mile. A marathon time of 3 hours is a pace of 6:52 per mile.
Ryan said he should have rounded his marathon time to four hours, not three.
Runner's World said a Ryan spokesman on Friday night forwarded a statement from the candidate about his marathon experience:
"The race was more than 20 years ago, but my brother Tobin—who ran Boston last year—reminds me that he is the owner of the fastest marathon in the family and has never himself ran a sub-three. If I were to do any rounding, it would certainly be to four hours, not three. He gave me a good ribbing over this at dinner tonight."

Wow, there is NO WAY this was a misstatement.

it is likely a misstatement...he flat out said he didn't remember his time

do you think mrs. obama saying that kenya is president obama's home country a misstatement?

I was in the Army over 20 years ago. My first two mile run for time was 19:36. It was abysmal. My last 2 mile in basic training was 10:15. In AIT it remained in the 10's. My best ever two mile in the army was 9:46. I was a running machine by then. My 19:36 time was while I was in excess of 200 lbs. By the time I ran a 10:15 I weighed 175. When I ran 9:46 I was 162 pounds. I remember all of this. You don't forget these sort of things. If I ran a sub 7 minute mile for 26 miles I would NEVER forget it.

If he'll lie about a marathon time, what else will he lie about?

Medicare, Social Security, you name it.

I love the way he so casually admitted this one, though. Got a 'good ribbing' from his brother. Ha-ha, lying's funny in the Ryan household, apparently.

Lying is easy and causes little discomfort for sociopaths.

So he told a fish story. Big deal.

True dat. I ran a half marathon in 1996 in 1:36. That's close to 7:30/mile. I also ran a sub 20 5k that fall (about 6:20/mi) and won my age group (30 - 35). The following summer I rode a 100 mile by myself in a few minutes under 5 hours (20 mph). That was way harder than the half marathon. I also competed in a duathlon that year (5k run, 30k bike, 5k run) with the goal of breaking 1hr 30 min. I did it in 1:30:40. I pushed my self so hard I broke the 5th metatarsal bone in both feet early on in the second run but kept going. I pretty much gave up running after that.

I'm sorry but don't plan on voting for the Romney/Ryan ticket and I feel I have much better reasons for doing that than he lied about his time running a marathon.

Again, it shows a pattern or is it just a guy thing where they alwyss overexaggerate their abilities? ;)

Taking a taxi to cover the 26 miles is so much easier on the legs and leaves you with enough energy to get another taxi home.

I disagree slightly. Given that it was 20 years ago... people tend to get 'faster' over time. Kind of like a fish tale. The first time it was a 12 pound bass, 30 years from now he caught moby dick. It is very common among athletes to exaggerate... though this is a big exaggeration, which is why I only disagree slightly.

That said, I have run marathons and an Ironman, I know my times to the minute for each... though the seconds of the marathons I don't recall anymore. For the Ironman I recall every friggin second of that bastard. :)

1) Nice times in the two mile runs... my fastest in high school was 10:47

2) If he stopped and thought about it he would probably remember. But like a fish tale, he probably has told people of his marathon over 20 years, each time getting a bit faster. That said, cutting an hour off is sad.
