Tell us again how we need less government regulation of business, will you, righties?




A federal judge has given final approval to a $37.5 million settlement between companies that made government-issued trailers after hurricanes in 2005 and storm victims who claim they were exposed to elevated levels of formaldehyde while living in the shelters.



U.S. District Judge Kurt Engelhardt heard testimony Thursday before ruling from the bench.



Roughly 55,000 residents of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Texas who lived in trailers provided by the Federal Emergency Management Agency after Hurricanes Katrina and Rita will be eligible for shares of the money paid by more than two dozen manufacturers.

Did the government manufacture the trailers?




Formaldehyde, a chemical commonly found in building materials, can cause breathing problems and is classified as a carcinogen.


Government tests on hundreds of trailers in Louisiana and Mississippi found formaldehyde levels that were, on average, about five times what people are exposed to in most modern homes.


FEMA isn’t a party to the settlements and had downplayed formaldehyde risks for months before those test results were announced in February 2008.


As early as 2006, trailer occupants began reporting headaches, nosebleeds and difficulty breathing.

So if a manufacturer sells dangerous goods that cause disease and death, it's "caveat emptor", and the manufacturer has zero liability?

Yeah, we need less government oversight of industry, right?

It should always be caveat emptor. You somehow think the gobblement is in a position to protect you and cares about you. When will you ever learn.

I heard the trailers were made by Halliburton and they had excess formaldehyde to get rid of so instead of dumping it in the river they figgerred they would just put in these trailers cuz they was only going to people of color right?

'caveat emptor' has been a long time philosophy to follow. It is YOUR responsibility to research and know what you are about to purchase. 'zero liability' is your strawman to bear.
