Romney loses, what now for Republicans?

This very thread shows the division.

Here's the bottom line, the Republican base is shrinking, plain and simple ,I agree. Every year, whote people move towards being the minority. As more & more minorities get into the voting pool, they go democratic. Thats a problem for Republicans. The GOP needs to develop and reach out to minorities, and get on board with their issues,no doubt. The same thing goes for the youth vote, which is clearly what won Obama the election. There are some great minority and young GOP people...

Marco Rubio- Popular and young, and alot more in touch with issues facing latino voters.

Condie Rice- Sure, she's a Bush party republican, but she is a strong successful woman, with great foreign policy experience,is towards the center on issues such as abortion, etc

Bobby Jindal- A popular and young Governor with experience

Mia Love -She narrowly lost her congress bid(less than 1%), she's a conservative and popular young black woman. She WILL be back

The GOP had better figure out a way to get these people involved, and look openly at moving towards middle America. Moving towards the middle will certainly cost them ultra conservative support, but what they lose, may be made up by what they gain. I suspect, Rubio will be pushed to be involved on the next ticket. I like him, he's popular, likeable, will help with latino voters, and will help deliver Florida.

For those that said people voted against the "rape" & "abortion" politicians, I simply DONT believe that. The issues of rape and abortion were far down any list if you look at the exit poll data. Economy was number one...plain and simple. Polling suggested that most people thought the country was going in the wrong direction. People thought that Romney could handle the economy better than Obama. With ALL OF THAT, Obama still won, for one simple reason......minority & youth vote,PERIOD! The monority vote was LOCKED IN for Obama, no matter what other issues were on the table, no matter what the economy was like, they were going to vote Obama no matter what,so if you are being honest, you have to admit that. Again, 50% of this country voted against Obama, and wanted change. Take the extra minority & youth vote out, and Romney wins easily.

So, again, the GOP better figure out how to tap into that minority/youth market, and be more open to issues facing those two groups. If not, they can expect more of the same in elections to come. I still believe that we are now set adrift on a fiscal sea. Obama will tav and spend us into oblivion. Obamacare will crush our country, and as a result, people will move sharply back to conservative fiscal values,I just hope its not too late

Obama has a dem controlled Senate. He has Obama Care,he has all he wants, doesnt he? So, 4 years from now, if we are 20-25 trillion in the hole and have severely high unemployment, I hope he still wont be blaming Bush.

Here's what he has on the horizon....The Fiscal cliff, and a nuclear Iran, and let's not forget, people still want answers about Benghazi

I wont, but if the current trajectory continues, I certantly hope you are able to give the President credit.

Yes, I have. The idea that kids who came to America when they were young and grew up here should have a chance to obtain citizenship. It's complete lunacy to deport them after having been educated here. Deportation is just one example of the Conservative mindset which is, "it's always been done that way so keep doing it."

and what did that solve regarding the problem of their parents?......

Credit where credit is due....AND BLAME WHERE ITS DUE. If 3 or 4 years from now, we are still mired in a terrible economy,I do not want to hear BUSH coming out of this guy's mouth.

Wanted to add another great young Republican to the list that would help with minority and female vote, Nikki Haley.

Sorry,I disagree, I think its BOTH image & policy. Again, white voters dropping steadily EVERY ELECTION. GOP either reaches out to minorities, or continues to lose elections

The issues I brought up are valid issues, and with such a very close popular vote, others are thinking the same thing. The dem party is supported by the likes of Springsteen, Clooney, Madonna and Jay z. These people are hypocritical, they rally against the "rich and powerful" republicans for being out of touch, yet the biggest choices these people have is which Bentley to drive or which mansion to go to.

Bottom line, this guy now has his Senatorial majority, and Obamacare. My projection, is he runs this country into the ground, and 4 years from now, Republicans cruise to victory, but at the expense of the good of our country. That being said, we need to go to the middle more. We need to get minority votes since there are less and less white voters every year.
You didn't bring up a single valid issue. You brought up a bunch of non-existant strawman Faux news talking points. This is a big part of the reason why your side lost.

Reaching out to minority voters with policies that minority voters don't like doesn't seem like a recipe for success to me, but what do I know?

We'll get the usual Rush & Hannity talk of "we weren't conservative enough", and how the only way to win is to stick w/ right-wing principles.

But in case anyone didn't notice, last night was HUGE for progressive ideals, not just Obama. "God, guns & gays" is no longer a viabile platform.

Hello....the poular vote is almost 50/50, 49/50....this country is divided, its obvious. If you dont recognize that, your party may be doomed next election just like mine was this election. Alot of people do NOT want more tax and spend policies. We dont want a crushing deficit. We dont want bigger govt. Maybe we need to take a step back to take a step forward. Maybe we need to let Obama run us into a black hole,to prove that we are right, and have people swing back to our fiscal policies. I hope I am wrong, but my prediction(as well as many economists) is that Obamacare is going to sink us.

Those are part and parcel to the Southern strategy and you're right. The Southern strategy is dead. It's predicated on a 75% or higher white voter turn out. That's not the reality anymore. Hey, though, to toss some props out to Mitt. He did his part too to kill the Southern strategy by running to the middle in his campaign. Sure, it wasn't enough but it's a begining of the reforms Republicans will need to make to be viable at the national level.

How do you expect they can do that if they don't change their policies?

They need to be more mainstream. They need to realize, we are in the 21st century. I am not defending every policy or position the GOP has, and I dont agree with all of them. If two guys want to get married I could care less. If a woman wants an abortion,I personally dont agree with it, but I have no interest in telling her what to do. I believe in the right to bare arms, but I dont beleieve that people should be able to stockpile dangerous assault weapons. There are others like me, I am not alone. I just want to see smaller govt, fiscal responsibility, and energy independence. Again, there are others like me that feel this way about these issues, and the GOP better find them quick.

For Christ's sake get a grip. Romney's policy would have expanded the national debt. Can you please deal with reality or shut the fuck up? You are getting extremely boring at this point.

I was encourage to see more women, more diversity in the election results last night.

Blacks,93% voted for Obama
Latinos,71% voted for Obama
Unmarried women,67% voted for Obama
Age 18-28 voters, 60% voted for Obama

Latinos alone propelled Obama to victory. Again, the white vote is going down every election...the GOP must reach into these other groups. If the GOP had just 1% more from each of these groups, Romney wins....so the GOP must wake up

Hello, people are just as fed up with cut taxes, spend far more and borrow, borrow, borrow. They are also sick and tired of right wing identity politics. The national vote may seem close but this was a land slide electoral victory and its demonstrable proof that the current Republican paradigm simply doesn't work. People want competent but limited government. What they don't want is right wing bigotry institutionalized in our government or culture nor do they want extreme right wing fiscal policy which has turned our nation into a plutocracy.

The simple fact is The Southern Strategy is dead. Southern cultural values have been rejected at a national level. Republicans now have no choice but to adopt a new strategy. Next they will have to walk away from irresponsible and unfair supply sider policies and return to Keynsian economic policies. Supply side economics is a failed system, we've tried it for 30 years and it hasn't work, it's time to return to the Keynesian model.

Unless Republicans are willing to make those reforms the changing demographics of this nation will keep them a permanent minority.
