You do realize the Democrats had a lock on the South until the 70's, don't you? Prior to that, the only time Republicans controlled the South was during reconstruction. Guess who voted the Republicans in? Not white racists. Learn some history, Howey.

I realize that the Democrats of the South in the 60s are the Republicans of today. And have stated as such many times on here. Same as I've said Ronny would be drummed out of the party today as a RINO.

But why does Howey attribute slavery and segregation to the GOP, the party that ended slavery, opposed Jim Crow laws, and passed the civil rights act?
 
Conservative (which isn't the libertarians or t-baggers) = evangelicals and socially backward folks. They're also hard dippers into the federal money...they cost us a lot of money. Dixiecrats went over to the cozy warmth of the republicans generations ago but these same people resent being called out for their overt racism.

I guess the question comes down to would you rather face someone who openly dislikes you because of your race or go to places like Boston and others where they dislike you because of your race but keep it on the inside and pretend to be your friend on the outside?

I'm afraid you're confused. Yes, the Republican Party of old did those things. Good for them.

The maps indicate that the states today that voted Republican are the same states then that voted for slavery and practiced racial segregation.

Aside from Strom Thurmond, who recanted and apologized for his racism, do you have any evidence to support this assertion that Dixiecrats flooded into the GOP?

Were there restrictions on voting in Boston? Voter ID laws...few machines, long lines? All those things and more (throwing voters off the rolls etc.) were happening in states with the GOP in control.

Huh? I was talking about racism. Racism exists in areas other than just the South. Are you not familiar with Boston's racial history? There is unfortunately plenty of racism here in the Bay Area and we aren't exactly a backwards area.

I'm not projecting anything. Show me racism doesn't exist where I live or Boston doesn't have a racist past. I grew up in Oakland and have lived all over the U.S. Don't tell me I don't have a clue.
