Meatless Mondays in L.A.

I'm assuming this is following the lead of Bloomberg in NYC. How long until this voluntary measure turns involuntary?

Los Angeles City Council Embraces "Meatless Mondays"

LA became the biggest city to endorse the movement to reduce meat consumption for health and environmental reasons

Los Angeles is turning vegetarian – at least one day per week.

Under a resolution unanimously approved by the City Council this week, all future Mondays in the City of Angels have been declared "Meatless Mondays."

It's part of an international campaign to cut down on meat consumption for health and environmental reasons.

Both the spiritual home of the hamburger and a haven for the health-obsessed, Los Angeles became the largest city in the nation to support the Meatless Monday campaign. The nonprofit initiative, started in 2003, is associated with Johns Hopkins University's public health school.

Councilwoman Jan Perry, who introduced the motion with Councilman Ed Reyes, noted the environmental impacts of meat production, and she emphasized that a high-meat diet has been linked to health problems such as colon, prostate, kidney and breast cancers, as well as heart disease.

"Eating less meat can prevent and even reverse some of our nation's most common illnesses," Perry said.

"We've become disconnected in some ways from the simple truth that our health is directly affected by the foods we eat,'' she added.

Her motion posted 12-0 in a council session Friday.

Reyes said it is easy for individuals to feel helpless in the face of issues as big as global warming or the obesity epidemic, "but the small changes we make every day can have a tremendous impact. That's why this 'Meatless Monday' resolution is important. Together we can better our health, the animals and the environment, one plate at a time.''

The council resolution (PDF) referred to the link between livestock and environmental problem, and noted that reduced consumption of animal-based foods can "lower our carbon footprint."

The resolution also pointed to statistics showing more than half of Los Angeles County residents are obese or overweight, and stated reduced meat consumption can lower health risks.

How long? I'd say by the time this becomes involuntary whether you can have meat on Monday will be the least of your worries.

Do you find any intrinsic value in the City Council coming up with this resolution?

Yes, if everyone gave up meat for only one day a week the impact on the environment would be tremendous. With the planet racing off a cliff a city council making what really amounts to an educational recommendation is mild.

I wish all libtardiots would go meatless forever. We should start with food stamp recipients. I mean we pay for their food. We should be able to tell them what to eat right?

Food stamp recipients can only purchase Vegan diets

I think outraged conservatives should organize a counter-movement called "Meatsack Mondays" where they each get a sack of assorted meat products to devour.

I'm not outraged. In fact to borrow one of your favorite words I think it's hilarious. L.A. takes a back seat to very few in terms of its local corruption. That they spend their time on this is great. Even though San Francisco and L.A. vote the same they might as well be different states. Outside of USC I don't give two sh*ts about L.A. I will laugh if the City eventually does go bankrupt.

Yeah, I wasn't aiming that one at you. You strike me as the type to be bemused by this sort of thing.

I found the article on the usc football board where some people were complaining about it and others actually got into a discussion about how healthy being a vegatarian actually is. The Bay Area in me (rivalry/dislike of LA) comes out when I see something like this so it is worth a good laugh.
