It works great, until it doesn't. Rand Paul feels blacks shouldn't be served in diners. That doesn't work very well in most states.

There are no waterways in the northeast that aren't polluted with Mercury from coal fired plants. Yet, the coal industry fights tooth and nail to keep the status quo.

The free market works great for some things - not all things.

The biggest issue w/ letting the free market decide anything is that there is really only one decision-maker in the free market, and that is profit. So, when it comes to determining which products are best or employing people, generally, the free market does a fine job.

But when it comes to something like protecting the environment, who would trust the free market to do that? Without regulations, most companies would choose to pollute if they had to spend any significant money not to, because profit is the only motivating factor. It's the same with health insurance - those companies profit more if they can find a way to deny coverage, which is why many of them have claims agents who actually have quotas for coverage denial.

It gives power to "THE STATE"!
The Feds, with that comes bigger, more layers of government, more control, more red tape at all levels, all in all a more powerfull government.
It will start with healthcare then spread like a disease to all levels of government.
More and more people will work for the government, but less will get done.
It has been seen in every socialist country on earth.
It will take months of chasing paperwork to get the simplest task completed.

Never in history, once a country has implemented a government health system, have the citizens requested, much less demanded, it revert to the old "pay or suffer" system and every country started out with a "pay or suffer" system. The evidence of a government system's superiority speaks for itself.
