Maybe its because I live in Palm Beach County, not the intelectuall or educational breadbasket of the USA, but I know SOO many people who appear to be successfull in business who are IDIOTS, they dont provide the best service to customers, they cheat and steal yet make lots of money.

Case in point, I know a man who is a middle manager of a medium size Home Health Agency. The guy is an IDIOT. He fired one of his top producing sales people because she was not doing things "his way". The numbers dont lie, this sales person was always number one or two in the agency in number. She went to another agency and makes more money there. The same manager has gotten his corporation sued twice for sexual harrassment. For years Ive been wondering how this guy kept his management job, he still works at this company and lives a nice lifestyle. This week the riddle was disclosed to me... his mother is a major investor in the company so they keep this guy in his position. So now this guy harms his company, he makes bad decisions yet he keeps his job because of his mothers money. The best services are not getting to the customers.

In my field there are many examples. There are plenty of very bad lawyers, poor at there jobs or simply crooked (suprising I know). But these firms started out with lots of money and advertise heavily. They do a bulk business and make a tun of money. Very few of the clients leave happy but it does not matter because they get new ones from the advertisements. I keep my case load low, I have about 1/4 to 1/8th of the business of these big guys. 90% of the people in the county have never heard of me while 95% of the people in the county have heard of the big guys. I almost always get better results than these big guys and per case I make a LOT more money than them, yet they make a lot more money than I do because they do so many more cases than me. In the mean time they are spending money trying to put the little guys like me out of business by driving up the cost of litigation and making the hoops more costly to jump through. The best services are not getting to the customers.

A friend of mine invented a different type of hairbrush for kids, it did not hurt for girls with long hair to use it. She had it mass produced and marketed it herself. The thing started selling like hotcakes. A large Corporation that sells beauty products noticed and offered her a lot of money to sell them the business. An unnegotable part of the Contract required that she stay out of the beauty product business for a certian amount of time. This large Corporation let it be known that if she did not sell they would make a simular product and sell it for less untill they ran her out of the industry. She took the offer, that company simply owns her product and does not produce it, they did not want a better product on the shelves next to theres. They do not make the better brush, they simply sit on it. The best product is not getting to the customers.

Capitalism would say that these guys operators who provide sub-standard service would go out of business, they dont, they thrive.

Unfortunately, all systems are kind of flawed. There are huge flaws in capitalism, and it's probably not what the masses would choose if they were blinded by the proverbial "veil of ignorance," but other systems like communism, socialism, et al. are really much worse, imo.

There probably is something better out there, but it hasn't been thought up yet.

What about Capitolism with limits. Let the Government, for example, prevent certian corporations from getting to big. Let the Government prevent preditory practices. Let the Government put limits on deceptive advertising.

It's kinda like Tallulah Bankhead saying "I've had a man and I've had a woman and there's got to be something better".

IMO there is - Capitalism mixed with very strong Socialistic safety nets.

It seems that you have the best answer Ive seen yet.

The money/power in our culture needs to be broken up and shaken loose. It needs to be spread around so that those who are a combonation of smart and honest end up with more than with those who are born with it or simply dishonest.

Great quote.

I sort of agree about Capitalism with strong gov't controls/regulations, but in order to be an improvement, the gov't would just have to be better. Unfortunately, I have had the experience of working in gov't at both the Fed & local level, and we all see what are elected politicians are like. If we had the best & the brightest not only in elected positions but in the bureaucracy, it would be a beautiful thing.

But we don't; we basically have the opposite. I just don't have faith in the gov't to run things efficiently or effectively. They usually screw it up.

I dont belive the Government should run things, the Government should simply strictly police things that are being run. Bust up the monopolies and break apart the power structure.

Either way, it doesn't work unless they a) know what they're doing, and b) don't have a direct stake in the greed of corporations.

The latter is really a bigger problem than the incompetence. The fact that Washington is so beholden to corporate money is probably one of capitalism's greatest failures.

So how can we reduce the percentage of Corporate money flowing into politics?

Personally, I'd ban it, and I'd ban lobbyists. Money isn't speech. Limit campaigns to personal contributions, get rid of PAC's and 527's or whatever they are (always mix it up w/ the college savings fund), and have free airtime for candidates.

The money in politics was out of control decades ago. Today, it's so absurd that all you can really do is laugh. It's a perversion of democracy.

Im with you, but the only way we are going to do that is to get rid of the conservative wing of the Supreme Court.

'pure' capitalism sucks, but then so does 'pure' socialism

my elder son runs his own business recycling cell phones and cell phone batteries (he started with his step brother (who left to strike out on his own) and ran his business out of their apartment), he now owns his own business and employs over 30 people...he offers group health insurance and a 401k, also, he does not employ any illegals

so is he a capitalist or a socialist or neither

ps he follows all calif and federal labor laws, is married and has two young daughters

well that settles it then.....we certainly don't want to have anything to do with an economic system that isn't perfect......

She went to another agency and makes more money there.

wait, isn't lateral movement an aspect of capitalism?.....

She took the offer

so is this....

they get new ones from the advertisements

and you are free to advertise the fact you get better results 95% of the time.....that is capitalism......

Thats an interesting story....but details seem to be missing....
An 'invention' with no ownership or rights to the invention....why ?
Aren't there laws to protect inventions ?....Seems I'm always hearing there is....
Doesn't she know a good lawyer that could have advised her ?

It may no be the system of capitalism that is flawed, but the flaws in greedy human nature....simply, thieves and lack of morals and ethics....
I don't doubt your story, and realize you could only give us the short version.....but ?
And there are certainly thousands of businesses that DO go our of business because of sub-standard service every year....

Is it the lack of laws or the lack of enforcement of existing laws ?

with the internet, people can contribute to candidates of their choice with no anonymous big money donors, pacs or other sources of anonymous money

no corporate, union or other special interest money

or if they want, people can band together and email their elected representatives or even call them...or even horror upon horror use snail mail

Ok, lets start by breaking up the Liberal biased Main Stream media who actively manipulated news stories to promote Liberalismn and Obama. No one can tell me that this did not happen, because I listened to ABC, NBC, CBS, CNN, MSNBC, and they are overwhelmingly Liberally biased with a few "House" Conservative Reporters", just to try to appease the masses. Thank God for Fox trying to report all the News, although they do slant more to Conservativism, yet they still have Liberal Greta Van Susterin in a premium time slot. There are no Liberal News Anchors on any of the mainstream media groups, unless you count turncoat Joe Scaroborogh on MSNBC. All I do is watch Golf, Tennis, and News, day in and day out, so I consider myself an expert on recognizing Liberalism, I know it when I see/hear it, almost as good as the great Rush Limbaugh does.
