FEC SLAPS OBAMA CAMPAIGN WITH MASSIVE FINE FOR 2008 VIOLATIONS

WASHINGTON (TheBlaze/AP) — President Barack Obama’s 2008 campaign has been fined $375,000 by the Federal Election Commission for reporting violations related to a set of donations received during the final days of the campaign. The infraction, which is historical in nature when considering its size, was first reported by POLITICO.

The fines are among the largest ever levied on a presidential campaign by the FEC and stem from a series of missing filings for nearly 1,300 contributions totaling nearly $1.8 million. Campaigns are required to file the reports during the final weeks of the campaign. POLITICO has more:

culture of corruption?

interesting how it took 4 years and this comes out after obama gets reelected

Oh I am sure they just wanted to do a thorough investigation. The fine was massive compared to what he hauled in. I bet that will keep someone from doing that again.

He'll if I could rob a bank for $1 million and only pay a $250k fine I would be like a pig in shit

I suppose I agree with ILA, but there's always a chance corruption within Federal Election Commission.

In any case, this whole ordeal really speaks the the role money plays in politics nowadays.

i actually believed obama might be different, given his numerous promises, but unfortunately, he is just like virtually every other politician - they bow down to money

I don't have a problem with money in politics per se. The way we do it is of course convoluted and only serves to keep incumbents in their seats. It is a bipartisan cluster fuck. There will always be rent seekers like General Electric who find it more convenient to coerce a few politicians rather than do the hard work of coming up with products people want. Why try to satisfy 100 million consumers when you can spend $1 million on a couple of politicians? Talk about ROI?

Interestingly enough McShamnesty's campaign finance reform actually led to MORE money being spent on politics. Who woulda thunk it?

But independent experts, including former FEC commissioner Michael Toner, said after the audit was released that the infractions were relatively minor, given the scope of the campaign

“$375,000 is a huge fine,” said Republican election lawyer Jason Torchinsky. “It may one of their top five- or 10-largest fines.”

But he added, “They’re also the first billion-dollar presidential campaign. Proportionally, it’s not out of line.”

The major sticking point for the FEC appeared to be a series of missing 48-hour notices for nearly 1,300 contributions totaling more than $1.8 million — an issue that lawyers familiar with the commission’s work say the FEC takes seriously. The notices must be filed on contributions of $1,000 or more that are received within the 20-day window of Election Day.

More than half of those contributions were transferred from the Obama Victory Fund,a joint committee between the campaign and the Democratic National Committee.

Slow down there puddin pop. Who said anything about impeachment? Have you had like 10 five hour energy drinks this morning? I am just saying that the fine is a pittance compared to what he hauled in. It is just the price of doing business when you think about it. We are also commenting on how long it took the FEC to come down with the decision.

But, if you want to get your helicopter spinning in other directions then go for it sweetie

Well, that does bring up an interesting point:

In a very real, progressive sense, money plays a massive role in politics - -it does so to a point where it's deciding modern elections. So yes, we do need campaign reform and it needs to be a priority.
