when a cop kills your dog, whether it was secured in your yard or not, well the cops and city say 'sorry, just get another dog', but when you kill a police dog, you get executed.

Authorities said they shot and killed a man Tuesday afternoon after he allegedly fatally stabbed a St. Paul Police dog.

A little after 1 p.m., law enforcement agencies went to a home in the 700 block of Aurora Av. in St. Paul to talk to a person of interest, said St. Paul Police spokesman Sgt. Paul Paulos.

Authorities went inside the house and the police dog located the man in the basement. The dog was fatally stabbed and authorities shot and killed the man, police said.

Police didn't provide any further details such as why authorities were looking for the man and who shot at him.

When asked about police protocol when a public safety dog is injured, Paulos said police dogs are treated the same as their police officer counterparts.

"If the dog is harmed, there is a likelihood that the harm will be turned on the officer," he added.

Paulos, who previously served as a K-9 officer, described police dogs as family members. "They are the very front line," he said Tuesday afternoon.

Anyone convicted of killing or permanently disabling a police dog would have to pay the cost of replacing the animal under a bill moving through the Indiana Legislature.

The House voted 97-0 on Tuesday to approve the bill and send it on the Senate for consideration.

Bill sponsor Rep. Shelli VanDenburgh of Crown Point says police departments face spending up to $12,000 to buy and train a dog.

Current law makes it a felony punishable by six months to three years in prison to kill or badly injure a police dog, but judges have the option of whether to order the payment of reimbursement cost.

note that there is no law in Indiana that forces the government to reimburse you if they kill your dog.

A cop in Los Angeles goes rogue and starts taking out other police officers and their families. A mad man kills kindergarteners at Sandy Hook elementary. The south side of Chicago becomes the murder capitol of the nation. Yes, I would say that police are under a lot of stress right now. As professional at police try to be, they are human. I think we should cut them some slack, and show them some appreciation.

A couple years ago the police shot and killed an illegal alien up on drugs next door to my grandpop. The illegal had managed to break into the neighbor's back window, and into the master bedroom where the homeowners were sleeping. This is what I think of when I think of police. Perhaps some or the posters in this thread need to learn a lesson here. If you have a gripe about your police department, get off your ass, and go see your mayor, city manager, or councilman. Don't dump your garbage anonymously on a message board.

So because of 'stress' we should overlook the massive amount of civil liberties violations and outright illegal acts that police commit daily?

Absolutely not. However, we should require know-it-alls like you to work as a police officer for six months, and then see what you have to say. As a liberal, I dislike arm-chair liberals who have easy. "bleeding heart" pat answers more than I dislike conservatives. You see conservatives have no excuse for being stupid. You do.

Again, absolutely not. However, we should require know-it-alls like you to work as a police officer for six months, and then see what you have to say. Yeah, my years as a MP sure didn't mean anything, or the hundreds of cops I work with daily. I clearly have no idea what I'm talking about at all.

the 'walk a mile in their shoes' argument fails on it's face. the irony is that idiots like you believe both sides of it and don't even see your hypocrisy. I used to work a job in the military making split second decisions also and I held many lives in my hands every time I was on the job. If I made a mistake, you can damn guarantee that I would not be cut any slack or given any leeway for my fuckups, whereas you think cops should be. let's examine some of the fallacies, shall we?

1) 'we hold cops to a higher standard'.......no, we really don't. the USSC has ruled that cities are completely free to deny employment as a police officer to people whose IQ is too high.
2) 'cops know the law'.......no, they don't. truth be told, NOBODY knows every single law out there, but if YOU unknowingly break a law, then you're told that ignorance of the law is no excuse. If a cop arrests you for violating a law that doesn't exist, he's relieved of any liability through a good faith exception.
3) 'cops are trained to make split second decisions'.......this may be, but they are in no way held accountable for their mistakes or lapses in judgement during these split second decisions. case in point, the 5 people shot and injured while LAPD was manhunting Dorner. The officers will not face any charge because they will be found to not have violated any policy or the DA will just refuse to press any charges.
4) if a cop uses excessive force on a compliant suspect, 9 times out of 10 the cop in question faces no punishment at all. Either the city settles the lawsuit, the courts exonerate the cop due to some technicality such as 'followed all policies and procedures', or in the eventuality that the cop is charged and tried, ends up acquitted because of panty waists like YOU who think that someone should do their job for 6 months just to see how bad it is.

so no, fuck you and fuck your bullshit about cutting slack to police officers who have too much fucking power.

Now this is something I can agree with you on. You do not know what you are talking about.

Clearly police officers are human beings, subject to the stresses and reactions just like the rest of us. There is a point where even a professional, in any field, is going to have a hard time. A police officer in L. A. makes a hit list of other police and their families what do you think you is going to happen? From your reaction, I doubt you have any professional police experience.

What do you think the reaction was of police officers across the nation when they saw what happened at Sandy Hook. You are pure fluff, without a single link to back up your remarks, and your "so called" MP experience is highly questionable. I am almost ready to request your credentials as a thinking human being. How many years of college do you have?
