The stupidization of American government

It really wouldn't have been that hard to make the cuts & raise the revenues needed to avoid this past week's disaster. Tip O'Neil & Reagan would have done this in their sleep. It was all kinds of different in the '80's and prior to that; those were the days when the "base" took a backseat to compromise when it came to the good of the people as a whole.

Now, it's only about the base, 24x7. Obama & Boehner & the rest would rather posture and get high marks from their respective stalwarts for "holding their ground" than actually fix a problem.

For this, I blame Rush Limbaugh (and subsequently every idiot talk radio & cable pundit that followed him). He is relentless about the evils of "compromise", and how traitorous those who engage in it are. All to a chorus of "ditto's".

We reward this behavior, and get the gov't we deserve as a result.

What do you think is this disaster ?....you do realize that these 'cuts' are not cuts at all don't you....
Every gov. handout can be the same as last year, maybe even slightly more because the 'cuts' are cuts in the size of the yearly increase.....they are cuts in growth.
There is no reason that school kids and the elderly will starve or teachers, firemen and police protection should be cut...there is no reason for the illegals to
released from detention or border guards to be furlowed...its been lies from the start.

Why tf has Obama been lying about it for the last few months with the gloom and doom.....and now suddenly changes his tune yesterday.....
You'll conviently forget about the months of lies and tell us how he is now reassuring the folks....

Washington is still hiring at a breakneck pace and taking advantage of the ludicrous perks they've given themselves at taxpayer expense....

If only you guys would open your eyes to reality and stop eating every piece of bullshit you get fed from the left.

I didn't expect "disaster" to be a distracting kind of word. I mean, a few hundred thousand people will lose their jobs. How about "bummer"?

The point was that it was an easy fix, and our alleged leaders punted in favor of pumping up their base voters.

I've been thru several 10 percent layoff at a top ten corporation in my career. It's part of business.
3 percent is laughable

Why don't you answer pmp's post thingy ? Its your friggin' thread and you bail after 1 post ?

The truth is there is more to spend than last year and your asshole pres. is whining and crying like a stuck pig.

Won't you ever get it ?

LOL - golly, NOVA; sorry I didn't get back to PMP within 4 hours on a Sunday night.

And I did respond to you fools about that basic idea. As usual, you missed the point of the thread.

democrats got their chance to raise taxes back in january. you already got your part of the deal. that's what you keep conveniently forgetting.

If it shrinks the government then fine. For the greater good

apparently you missed the point of my question if you think you answered it......I will ask it again.......the government will spend more money than it did last year even after sequestration.....why would anyone lose a job?......

The budget goes up every year. Do you know why?

Why don't you look into that, and learn about it, instead of distracting from the point of my thread.

Even assuming that the Democrats raised taxes back in January (which they didn't), the Republicans got larger spending cuts in the 2011 Budget Control Act such that the ratio of revenue increases to spending cuts enacted since the Republicans decided to hold the American economy hostage in exchange for increasing the debt ceiling alreay heavily favors the spending cuts that Republicans want. Having a cuts only deal to avoid the sequester would have made the ratio even more disproportionate.

You're forgetting Tip O'Neils old addage that all politics are local. Many of these intransigent congressionals are facing primary challenges and these primaries, thanks to Gerrymandering are dominated by the extremes. What good is compromising if it costs them they're job?

It's easy to identify whats broken in the American political process. Its our primary system and gerrymandering. Fixing those problems will prove difficult. I'm all in favor of run-off primaries and taking districting away from the politicians.
