Same-sex couples begin marrying

Gay rights have made tremendous strides in the last 5 years. Its amazing to watch social progress when it finally takes hold and moves forward. Hundreds of years go by with barely a nudge, then all the sudden the ground shifts and 200 years of progress take place in 6 months.

There is still more to do, but this is great.

So in 10 years half of those against gay marriage will be pretending they always were for it, the other half will be sidelined as wacko homophobes. It was the same way with the civil rights movement, 10 years later you could not find anyone supporting segeration. Gov. Wallace went from "Segeration now, segeration tomorrow, segeration forever." to leading the civil rights movement in Alabama. (as slow as it was)

I much prefer the necessary changes to structures. Plus, I was talking about the shift from tsarism, which the government didn't cause. ;)

Well, my apologies then. I know significantly less about that excepting that it was shortly followed by another 'revolution' when it was discovered that these knew little abut how to govern because they were peasants. I think of them fondly as little tiny wine(rs) :). Red and white?

did you happen to read future shock?

change happens whether we want it to or not (short of a totalitarian government that prevents it, although it can only really majorly slow it way down)

I did not, but if you really want me to read it I'll add it to a list I'm compiling. 26 books this year I pledged on another site.

What I don't understand is why everyone is so sure their brand of change is the inevitable change, instead of some bastardization of cultures, ideals, and ethics? The 'great melting pot' isn't 'the great melting pot' for nothing.

Rant powers activate!
Aside, I understand fully that my ideal vision of a country was never, and will never be. I'd be happy in a world in which we privatize charity, eliminate all but medical welfare, adopt a focus on our community and develop pride in it. My neighborhood is crappy. The police just got the drug dealers off the corner because the magnet elementary school/citadel/hospital complained enough. If we now took steps to beautify the area we could eliminate most of the scum that infests the area. there are decent people living as my neighbors, I've met them. They simply refuse to take the time out of their lives (some people are sooo busy, what with unemployment to collect and all) and take some responsibility for their surroundings. Things are only as out of reach as you make them, and because I volunteer at the citadel enough to know they have enough money and could be stirred into action I can't express my disappointment enough that this sound byte society of ours has stereotyped me as a conservative prick with sociopathic issues. Everyone wants a better life, a better world yet so few will give up even 2 hours a week to do so. Charity is an obligation, imo, and is rightly taught as such by almost every religion. But with the wane of religion in the wake of science and the emerging soft (and increasingly pseudo) sciences and the advent of the experience culture where only the next thrill moves people nobody is interested in work when a bread and a circus is only a union phone call away, only a wall street movement away, only a weekly phone call to unemployment away.

Do you know that those some of the bastards on unemployment live better than me? They have a constant party either with their nose or their needles or their blunt and their morally bankrupt lovers of the week! And here I am, waking up at 0430 most days, exercising 3 days a week, eating canned soup and finding excuses to study the monotonous bullshit spewed from colleges everywhere. Apparently one can't be a psychiatrist without learning how to be a liberal. It's all tolerance and peace and gender inclusion and neutrality (except where 'social inequality' is concerned. Then lets nose dive right on in) and everyone to their own and feel free to steal taxpayers dollars so you can fail that course again! Never mind your family owns one of the largest towing services in the state! Never mind that college is only an excuse to pump untoward amounts of alcohol in your system and hip thrust the night away. Never mind that college is perpetually like 'grown up' highschool for all the social nuisance it requires. Never mind that some of these people would do better off in a trade school learning a hands-on skilled labour, the kind dying in our country at the hands of machines and sheer dumbassery and laziness. Somebody told me the other day they never did math by hand in class, because some people couldn't and nobody should be left out?! Is that a joke? you have to punch into a calculator the square root of 625?

And this could go on and on, but suffice to say I am disappointed in our youth and the seeming lack of regard for tradition, labor, charity, or anything resembling excellence. No need to put forth effort, mediocrity is the selling point of our schools. With a hearty helping of social hive mind. Bullying is bad, unless you bully the bully, eh?

I never said that. They want equal treatment under the law. That includes "benefits" but is not limited to it.

There are thousands of reasons gay people should be allowed marriage. "Benefits" is just a bundle of a bunch of them.

The general public does not really seem to understand what legal marriage is. Geesh, its a special status granted by the government to people who have agreed to bind there lives together based on tradition and the best interests of society. Its always been changing and evolving, its not very simular to what it was 100 years ago, and not simular to what it will be in 100 years. It changes to meet society's needs and understanding of humanity.

If you "marry" someone and then sacrafice your earning potential for the sake of your spouce's earning potential, you then own a percentage of your spouse's earnings. If you "marry" someone, and own a house, you cant sell it without there agreement or a court order. If you "marry" someone and then that person is killed due to negligance, you have a claim for your loss.

These are just a few examples of the benefits afforded to people who are married.

Contractural agreements can accomplish most of the same stuff, but many if not most people are not sophificated enough to draw up there own agreement or afford a lawyer to do it for them. For that reason, we have "marriage" which is basically a set of predetermined and evolving contractural agreements bundled into the legal marriage. You can get married without knowing what your rights are or that they even exist, yet you will still have those rights if you need them.

If we did not have the standard "marriage" we would see a detrament to society whereby people could make contractural agreements with eachother that would leave a spouse destatute and dependent on assistance to the benefit of the other spouse in the event of "divorce". Getting married is a way to legally protect yourself in a relationship that might put you in a weakened position in relation to the other party. Its also a way to ensure you the right to accomplish things as a single unit, and a way to take care of eachother.

The standard marriage agreement can be altered by people wishing to do so with prenumptual and antenumptual agreements.

This is a made-up conflict. If gays would accept civil unions instead of trying to ram this down the 60% or so who are against queer marriage the discussion would have ended years ago.

All gays want is equality. Get oner it.

the law would force me to treat their relationship as the equivalent of an actual marriage......

As it should be. Welcome to the 21st century homophobe. Now go find a dick to suck.

the law would force me to treat their relationship as the equivalent of an actual marriage......

Yup, as it sould. Just as someone who does not belve in marriage at all is currently forced to treat that relationship as marriage. The law requires me to treat a church as a non-profit institution, yet I dont belvie it should. The law requires me to treat my children a certian way, and individuals walking down the street.

The law requires everyone to comform to a standard, thats the way laws work. Now that does not mean you have to belvie they should be married, it does not mean you have to go to the weddings, it does not mean your church has to perform the ceramony.

In what instance are you concerned you will have to treat a same sex marriage in a way you do not want to?

It's pretty funny how dishonest social conservatives have shifted on this part of the argument once science thoroughly disproved their "natural" argument.

Why shouldn't we compare animals and other animals (i.e., humans) to understand our nature. Works with medical studies. Of course, they are not exactly the same but we can gain insights.

How exactly do you define/determine what is natural for humans?

^^^ In addition, there are no instincts in man. ^^^ We 'evolved' out of them.

Very silly... not true, surely you understand that we are born with lots of instincts and hold them. You must not have children.

Reaction. Not complex. You have muscles, you use them.

Its an instinct, its a complex reaction to stimuli. Breathing is an instinct, its a non-learned and complex. Fear of water is instinct. Attaction to mother is instinct. screaming due to hunger is instinct.

Ugh.

Breathing is a semicontrolled action. You'd breathe involunterily if you conciously tried not to, and will always continue to do so until death. No more an instinct than cell divsion is.

Fear of water is aquired through experience. No infant I know is afraid of water by from second 1. Not all children are afraid of water. Instincts are universial.

Learning the mother's vioce is an impression, a learned sound from before one is born.

Screaming due to hunger is a primitive reflex. I would like to stress the prominence of the word reflex in that article.

Again, humans do not posess rightful instinct.

You can use all the fancy names you choose... It's still instinct, and we have plenty of it. Ask any labor and delivery nurse, if a baby does not scream during its first bath, they start investigating whats wrong.
