Thoughts on Steubenville

As Spicoli would say, if you're posting here, and we're posting here...isn't it kind of our thread?

What a joke of a human being. Damo - can we finally get a ban here?

If only Helen Mirren would release a statement about this...

I don't understand why people continue to comment to ILA, this poster is the lowest of the low and a troll. Stop talking to him so he will dry up and blow away!

Why would you want to be banned; but if that's what you want, you could just leave.

As far as I know, the boys were convicted of rape....didn't hear all the gory details....

And as far as this being about 'control' and 'violence'.....there was no classic "violence" such as beating punching or threats....
And control ?.....how the hell do you control an unconsciousness person....hold them down with your little finger maybe....? tie them up with imaginary chain ?

This wasn't about violence or control or hate.....so to claim all rapes are about those things, is just plain inaccurate left wing bs.....
If wasn't even about sex in normal meaning of sex.

You're barking mad. Somebody put their hands on her body to remove her clothing. Someone dragged her from house to house. Someone dumped her on the ground and considered urinating on her. Someone penetrated her with fingers. Someone tried to stick his penis in her mouth. We have assault and sexual assault here, and that translates to violence.

She didn't have the ability to defend herself. She wasn't taken to another room to sleep it off, the boys were controlling what was being done to her, i.e. sexual assault. Since she was being used, she was being controlled.

Stop parsing the language to minimize the crime. These pieces of shit got less than they had coming to them for what they did.

Apparently you shouldn't teach your daughters that it is not a good idea to go to a party, get totally legless and not expect something untoward to happen.

We teach our daughters and sons that underage drinking is illegal. We teach them that getting blind drunk is not only illegal, it's vulgar and classless. And we teach them if someone does get drunk and helpless, that it's criminal to take sexual advantage of them.

We have TV ads over here warning women to not get legless and put themselves at risk.

I don't get this, I really don't. Maybe it's one of those unexplainable differences between two English-speaking countries. Why is it that just the women are warned to behave themselves? Where's the corresponding ad to males that taking sexual advantage of a "legless" woman is criminal?

You know both young men and young women here in the States go out, party, get trashed and sometimes get disgusting. But we don't put a separate label on the women. We say that anyone who does that, male or female, is acting drunk and disorderly. We pitch our advice and public service announcements to both genders equally. I've never heard anything on TV, radio or the press that expressly warns women only not to get drunk, and I believe there'd be a pretty loud outcry from women if there was.

I think that it has been well established that what they did was pretty sick, there is no need to reiterate it over and over. I posted an article from the Guardian where they stated that those Big Red parties were notorious for that sort of behaviour and that teenage girl had lied to her parents about where she was going.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2013/mar/17/steubenville-rape-trial-depressed-town

I'm pretty sure every kid who went to that party and knew there'd be alcohol, lied to the parents about it.

while you might be right about 'classic' violence, you are wrong that this was not about violence. Hell, I consider being unlawfully arrested as one of the highest forms of assault that could be done upon a person. it ranks a couple of steps below what happened to this girl.

I don't Understand the claim that "big red parties were notorious for this sort of behavior". It's been established that rape occurred. So big red parties were notorious for rape? So Tom reads this somewhere and comes on here to tsk tsk the girl for it? Like what kind of adult does that?????

My questions to that news are about adults. If this football team was notorious for committing rape and sex assaults, why did the school do nothing? Why did the police do nothing? Why were a group of teenage boys permitted to rape with impunity? Who are the previous victims? Who else needs to be brought to justice? Which adults covered this up? When will they be brought to justice?

How much do you have to hate women to read that a group of boys were notorious for raping people and scold a teenage girl for going to a party????????????????

How much??????
