Being White in Philly

There was an article in Philadlephia Magazine entitled 'Being White in Philly'. The Mayor of Philadelphia, who is black, apparently didn't like it.


In a letter to the Philadelphia Human Relations Commission, the mayor claims:


[T]he First Amendment, like other constitutional rights, is not an unfettered right, and notwithstanding the First Amendment, a publisher has a duty to the public to exercise its role in a responsible way. I ask the Commission to evaluate whether the “speech” employed in this essay is not the reckless equivalent of “shouting ‘fire!’ in a crowded theater,” its prejudiced, fact-challenged generalizations an incitement to extreme reaction.


After seeing this I had to read the article. The article is long and the author interviews white people who live in Phily about race relations in the City. The Mayor's name in Nutter and seeing his response to article it may be appropriate. Race relations aren't an easy subject and I believe we often pretend there are race issues in only certain parts of the country but that clearly isn't the case.

Edit: I didn't post this from a 'white people are good or bad' perspective. I will say I'm surprised a magazine appealing to an urban audience published this. (And by urban I don't mean black, I mean city people regardless of race)

Standard procedure for people who don't like what they read. However if they do like what they read it's "First Amendment" all the way. Please note this is not exclusively democrat or republican. It's a universal practice.


Personally I would have some sympathy for anybody stuck in a city's transitional zone, they tend to be poor, dilapidated and crime plagued, anybody who says that "The ghetto" doesn't have a crime problem is full of shit. Why that is, and what the answer may be is up for debate, but poor neighborhoods have crime and that scares families.

This mayor is just being a prick because he doesn't like that his city has crime.

Actually ya, there's a guy I work with who's very much Ethiopian, the term Ebony skin comes to mind when I think about him. Nice guy, speaks terrible english but he's getting better.
 
yes, we can't publish the truth because that might hurt someones feelings.

liberals can spout all the platitudes they want, but even Jessa Jackson said if he is walking down the street and someone is near him, he breathes a sigh of relief when it isn't a black man. Crime is about statistics. Profiling works. People want to keep their families safe so they move out of ghettos. Ghettos have been around for ages, only now do leftists associate the word for "blacks" because it is another code word for them to stir up resentment and keep blacks on the plantation.

If liberals are so compassionate, then maybe they should put their money and their lives where their mouths are and move en masse back to the ghettos. Show us how safe it is.
 
Cawacko I couldn't get through all of that. I really couldn't. It was insufferable. The author sounds like a moron and an asshole. If the mayor called him an insufferable moronic asshole, then he hit it right on the nose.
 
What white person alive in America doesn't "get" why the black woman reacted the way she did to the text about the blackberry? You have got to be kidding me, what a joke.

and yet people think i'm a radical when i chastise them for making this type of argument, telling them that more people will just push harder for more restrictions. 'shall make no law' was put in there for a reason, and Nutter shows why.

Look again. Many Ethiopians are dark as are many Ghanaians but none are the colour of the font (unless you have a dirty screen!)
 
Okay I read the whole thing Cawacko. I am really surprised at you for posting this without commenting on the content of the article. That guy is the biggest asshole ever, I cannot even believe it. I don't get it, i am white. Is it because I'm a woman? If that fucking guy wrote a similar article about how to get along with the bitches and all the things he couldn't say, and how he only wished he could be free to advise us on getting our act together (but you know the PC police won't let him! being the subtext), I would borrow Grind's imaginary gun and shoot him in the face! Shoot him right in his smug face! That's right! It would be imaginary, but it will still feel good!

What you mean is the above is why white men don't get to lecture minorities about race with impunity anymore.

It's just that as a white guy you are filled with resentment over any restrictions society places on you. You can still act like an asshole, it's just that now, you get called an asshole for it. Boo fucking hoo

More of the hate filled over the top bullshit that I was referring to.
 
People like Darla are a large part of the problem. She doesn't think white people, especially men, should be able to discuss the issue of race. Obviously the city of Philly thinks otherwise as they are having neighborhood meetings to do just that. Lucky for us they are not as full of hate as Darla.

I understand why she would have felt that way if it was a personal letter sent to her only but has it really come down to if you lost something and want to write a group message to your class asking if anyone found it you should check the race of each person in class and not send it to a person of a race who might find it offensive?

Darla I posted it for several reasons.

1) The article, the Mayor's response and the 'fallout' have made national news.

2) When the phrase 'We need to have national discussion on race' is used I think that can very different things to different people.

3) An article like this can lead to an excellent discussion. Of course it can lead to a not good discussion as well. But if we are to have this 'national discussion' all people need to talk and be heard and that includes whites and even the dreaded white male. If people don't speak out and listen to each other and learn from each other and understand where each other are coming from things will really never improve.
