"Pretty" and the damage it has done.

Ok, maybe this isn't technically a "Current Event". But the answer to this certainly is current and should be our future.

This needs to be played over and over and over until ALL our daughters can say it by heart!!! My daughters are beautiful because of who they are, what they know, and how they live. Not because they fit some preconceived plastic notion of physical attractiveness.

This needs to be played over and over until our sons no longer judge women solely for their physical beauty or expect them to be ageless caricatures of Barbi.

I agree. For example, Superfreak spent his whole childhood hearing how 'he had a face only a mother could love' and it caused him to grow up resenting great areas and institutions such as Ohio and USC.

Fortunately though SF has grown up to be a very handsome man.

You're arguing against thousands of years of biological instinct. Not saying it's right (even though that's all anyone will see), but it's a biological condition. Of course what constitutes beauty changes constantly. Now THAT you get to be more inclusive through societal changes.

everyone in this thread, likes attractive people

we like attractive people a lot.

all else being equal (personality, etc) tie is going to go to the better looking person. why wouldn't it?

I am not going to apologize for being attracted to certain features or preferring certain things in someone that would attract me.

Women are harder on other women about looks than men are. Men are a convenient excuse for it.

Yes pretty matters. It is evolution. Don't be anti science.

I am not fighting evolution or science. I am fighting against little girls starving themselves to death to look like the models our society puts out as the standard. I am fighting against the double standard that allows men to age and requires women to look 20 forever.

I can see I have not communicated my point.

No, you have. We're just being goofballs.

Okcupid did a pretty interesting indepth study on their users patterns:

Females of OkCupid, we site founders say to you: ouch! Paradoxically, it seems it’s women, not men, who have unrealistic standards for the “average” member of the opposite sex.

80% of males are rated below average attractiveness by women.

That's mindblowing.

Here is the distribution graph of how men perceive women:

Look at that, a normalized bell curve.

The difference of course, is that while men have a closer to reality perception of attractiveness levels, they chase after the higher end:

Women on the other hand, think all guys are basically ugly, but they "settle" more often:

This is for a few reasons:

1) obviously one has to "Settle" when you basically view everyone as unattractive to begin with
2) Women probably aren't as hung up on the physical, visual appeal as much as men are (does this really need to be said)?

TL;DR:
  • It's actually women, not men that have unrealistic standards of who is attractive
  • Men have more of a grounded perception, but tend to focus on the best looking
  • Women think men are all ugly, but that doesn't seem to get them as hung up.
