The Okinawa dugong(Dugong dugong), relatives of the manatee, live for 70 years. In Japanese culture, dugongs are associated with traditional Okinawan creation mythology. Because of their cultural importance, they are listed as a protected “natural monument” on the Japanese Register of Cultural Properties. Dugong herds once grazed peacefully on vast meadows of sea grass.
