Well, if they want a stake in the country they should pay. If the rich pay the most in taxes (which they do now) then they're going to have the biggest say in what goes on, because they have the biggest stake in it. Just like the Lotto, you gotta pay if you wanna play.

Political process in the Roman Republic was very efficient, and from 509 all the way to 121 there was not a single political assassination. Gaius Gracchus, however, was trying to destroy republicanism in Rome and replace it with a more democratic society, and when he was finally defeated that year in his third bid for Consul, some asshole decided to murder him, and thus the final century of the Republic was chaotic until it was destroyed formally in 27 BC by the installment of Augustus.

That last century was basically a bunch of demogogues pandering to the lowest common denominator.
 
Note to Desh, nearly all of the middle-aged conservatives that I personally know who were here in WA back in the 80's for the vote on the state lottery were vehemently opposed to it, and argued that the "education incentive" was just smoke and mirrors (history has proven them correct, as it no longer funds education here).

Exactly. Emotive appeals to the proles of the world have destroyed republics in the past and will destroy ours if we are not diligent.
