8th grader suspended and arrested for wearing an NRA t-shirt??

Funny you didn't discuss WHAT types of speech the court said it was okay to curtail. They put some limits on it.

Wearing a black armband isn't the same as wearing clothing with a political message, either, if you want to parse it that fine.

The bottom line is, the SC doesn't consider 1st amendment rights for school-age children to be a slam dunk. They've looked at it case by case.

I think the teacher should actually be teaching the kids about the 2nd Amendment rather than wasting time bitching about a kid's T-shirt.

I doubt the kid is smart enough to comprehend, if this garbled comment is any indication: "What they're doing is trying to take away my rights, my freedom of speech and my Second Amendment," Jared told the station.

Trying to take away his Second Amendment?

Obviously you're not too familiar with West Virginia. More than 50% of the citizens own guns.
.

Great message to teach a kid... never question authority... they are always right.

If he had violated the schools policy, you might have a point. But he didn't. Yet he got suspended anyway because some douche bag teacher doesn't like the 2nd Amendment.

Bow down to your government masters son... great lesson to teach him.

I just love the way you people who don't have kids are suddenly authorities on their upbringing. Get back to me after you've spent some extended time with a toddler.

The teacher is the one that was too dumb to comprehend the rules. Funny how you find that 'garbled' yet idiots like Jarud and Desh run around incoherent on this board consistently and you agree with them.

LMAO... so you think we have to have kids to recognize that you are teaching them a horrible lesson? Sorry, doesn't work that way.

"First they came for my t-shirt...."

You're so right SF, it's the first step to a complete breakdown of society. </sarcasm>

lol... amazing the hyperbole being tossed around by liberals wishing to defend this teachers ignorance. I truly hope you kids get arrested for following the rules. Then you can tell us how amazing the authorities acted.

Odd that they haven't commented. Odd that the students wore the same t shirt the day he came back. Odd they weren't suspended.

Pure nonsense. I have no problems with the rules. Neither did this kid. The problem is the that he didn't break the rules. The problem is the teacher tried to further his/her political agenda by bullying the kid. There was no justification for that. There do need to be rules... and when it is the TEACHER that violates the rules, it is the TEACHER that should be suspended.

The school can also not let teachers arbitrarily decide what is and isn't acceptable. They set forth the guidelines, the kid followed them. The teacher violated them. If you want authoritarian crap like this to occur, by all means support such nonsense at your school board meeting. I will not.

I bet you have never been to a school board meeting.

I can't believe they are being obtuse about this.

I can. Look who we're dealing with.

In loco parentis, I learned all about it when challenging school authority.

The teacher may have been in error, but there is a way to challenge school rules properly. I have challenged and won, but I always tell my children to comply, then I will come to their defense if they are correct.

Exactly! :good4u:

I didn't ignore it, and I don't think Mott did, either. The teacher may have acted inappropriately, but the story is very vague on details, the school nor police have commented.

You don't like the school rules and the absolute authority the school has, then people need to challenge it, but again, if you have open defiance in school it sets a presidence that could cause utter has in schools. There has to be rules.

The school can not possible list all the slogans on t-shirts that are not allowed. They set general guidelines and then rule based on offense. If you don't agree with the limitation of free speech, then, please attend a school board meeting and voice your disapproval.

Preach it, sister! :good4u:

A million t-shirt slogans in the world, I guess they think the school should have an O.E.D. sized book showing them all.
