The Force is With Me
Virginia Parents Outraged After Walmart Security Allegedly Suspected Father Of Kidnapping Biracial Daughters

A Virginia couple was shocked to find a police officer in front of their home when they returned from running errands, but they were even more surprised by the reason for the cop's visit-- to question whether or not they were in fact their children's parents.

Joseph, a white man who didn't want his last name revealed, and his black wife Keana told Fox5DC that they were outraged after the policeman told them a security guard at their local Walmart had suspected Joseph of kidnapping his three young daughters.

"He asks us very sincerely, ‘Hey, I was sent here by Walmart security. I just need to make sure that the children that you have are your own,’” Joseph said.

"I was dumbfounded," Keana said. "I sat there for a minute and I thought, ‘Did he just ask us if these were our kids knowing what we went through to have our children?’

The couple, who have been married for 10 years, have a four-year-old daughter and two-year-old twin girls. Joseph had taken the girls to a Walmart near their Prince County home to cash a check and left after spending a short time in the parking lot. After speaking with the officer, they called the store demanding an explanation.

According to Keana, she was told a customer was alarmed after seeing her husband and children.

"Well, the customer was concerned because they saw the children with your husband and he didn't think that they fit," Keana told the news station. "And I said, ‘What do you mean by they don't fit?’ And I was trying to get her to say it. And she says, ‘Well, they just don't match up.’”

As interracial marriage rates increase, the birth of interracial children has soared in the past decade, with more than seven percent born in the year before the 2010 census. According to The Washington Post, Virginia leads the nation in the percentage of marriages between blacks and whites, making Joseph and Keana just one of many couples who may be subjected to similar treatment.

The incidents that I've had were when I was with my bi-racial granddaughter .. the one in my avatar, who now looks like this ..

I don't shop at Walmart, so my incidents weren't there, but rather at a state college and a post office. I expect the looks, but not having the police ask me whose child is that.

I was kinda' pissed about it .. but I also understand the concerns people have about children.

Actually I was a bit relieved to see this on the news with a white guy dealing with the same issue. :0)

Lol

My niece is bi-racial and I remember walking through the airport with my sister and niece and people would look at us thinking we're a couple and wondering 'how the hell did those two have a baby with that skin tone'?

I know, don't they think, adoption, ever? My friends have three Chinese babies, it is hilarious what people say!

The looks are priceless. :0)

It's particularly a more sensitive issue when they're girls.

I am very Mediterranian looking, olive skin, dark hair, my children were all very blonde and very fair skinned when young, it is funny what people say to you.

Sometimes it isn't so funny .. but I'm sure you already know that too.

Actually, I think an America having to deal with the problems of a more diverse society is a good thing.

My white friend adopted a black baby. The first time I saw him I admit I was like WTF? My reaction was not to imply there was anything wrong with it just that yes it was surprising and definitely not something you see a lot of.

My cousin's daughter has three children by a black man. But then we are Choctaw and somewhat dark to begin with. But my niece, who evidently has had the Indian bred out of her (red hair, pale complexion), and her husband are in the process of trying to adopt 4 Hispanic children.

That said, I prefer erring on the side of caution, even if it ruffles some feathers, where the safety of children is concerned.

I'd even go so far as to agree with the 'something just doesn't look right' philosophy.

It's certainly intrusive to those with bi-racial children .. but I agree with you .. the safety of children comes first.

I was thinking about getting a tee-shirt that says, 'Yes, This Is Really My Granddaughter'

In fact, I think I'm going to do just that, :0)

A couple of my friend (she is hispanic, he is white) have two adopted daughters that are black. That seriously fucks with peoples minds.

Cool. I may get my niece a shirt too. She'd love it. We're a family of adopters. My mom raised 4 extra kids in addition to her 5. My oldest brother raised 6 kids that "weren't his own" but really were if you get my drift. Gives that song "half the dad that you didn't have to be" real meaning.

Wacko gives new meaning to 'he's half the man he used to be'... given he used to be a six year old girl.

That's very cool. :good4u:

Zoe was adopted.

Exactly bac....

I would rather the cop check it our and not give a shit about being pc.....whats more important, the kids or some pc crippled assholes feelings ?

I give the cop kudos for caring......if he didn't, you can bet your ass the pinheads would be accusing him of not caring due to the fact the kids were biracial....

I have the opposite problem.....I get amused when people tell me how much my children look like me......I consider that amazing since they are both adopted....
