"The death of the 8-month-old son of a Northeast Philadelphia faith-healing couple already on probation for the negligence death of another child has been ruled a homicide by a medical examiner, law enforcement sources said Tuesday. Brandon Scott Schaible died last month of bacterial pneumonia, severe dehydration, and infection at his parents' Rhawnhurst home after the parents withheld medical care, according to a report by Assistant Medical Examiner Gary Collins. The baby had had difficulty breathing, was irritable, and had little appetite for three days before his death, the report said.

"By the parents' own admission, they did not seek or provide medical care for their child," Collins wrote.

The medical examiner's findings and the results of a police investigation of the case have been forwarded to the District Attorney's Office for review. Criminal charges against the infant's parents, Herbert and Catherine Schaible, are likely, law-enforcement sources said, and could come as early as this week. In statements to police, the Schaibles said they did not seek medical help for their son because of their faith in God's power to heal.

As members of a Juniata Park church that shuns medical care, the Schaibles called an assistant pastor to their home to anoint and pray for their child, but never sought medical help even though they were obligated to do so under the terms of probation in the 2009 death of their 2-year-old son, Kent. That child died after being stricken with bacterial pneumonia and ailing for a week while the parents prayed but did not summon a doctor. The Schaibles also face potential prison time for violating the most explicit condition of their 2011 manslaughter conviction in Kent's death: to call a doctor for a sick child.

In Brandon's case, the Schaibles called a funeral home on April 18 and said the baby was dead. The funeral home notified the Medical Examiner's Office, which called police.

The Schaibles' remaining seven children, who range in age from about 8 to 17, were immediately placed in temporary foster care. They have been allowed to visit their parents during supervised visits and were permitted to attend a recent church service.

Idiocy....pure idiocy. Nothing wrong with prayer...but as the saying goes, God helps those who help themselves.

I'm a believer....I make no bones about it....but I am of the opinion that God's creations include our innovation and technology...or at least the gift of intellect and scientific curiosity.

Exactly. I agree 100%.

I don't scour the internet for every time some religious idiots does something retarded. I will tend to comment on what other people post here. I am very glad these people were convicted, putting religious dogma on children is straight up child abuse, and it should be outlawed.

So very tragic.

Well...there's nothing wrong with teaching your kids your faith...but I don't think that's what you meant by "putting religious dogma on children"...in the sense that they caused the deaths of TWO innocent children because of their twisted version of the faith? Absolutely.

Such sad stuff. Even Jesus alluded to the fact that the sick go to a doctor. Like 5:31. The man of steel is right, IMO, our innovations/abilities are God given and to be used.

Precisely. There's a big difference between "you can't go to the prom" and "you can't go to the doctor."

your innocence, so delightful.

nah I meant it the way you thought it wasn't. I don't believe kids should be taught to be intellectual lazy, and believe in fairy tales as if they were real. Doing so is making our children intentionally dumber and less equipped to handle the world.

As long as you teach them about all of man's religions and that different people believe different things. And then let them choose for themselves.

No way. My kids' are indoctrinated early and often. They will already have to "choose for themselves" at some point in their life but I will do my dead level best to insure that they make the right choice. I tell them about other religions, other beliefs/ non-beliefs in order to teach them to choose properly. They're my children. They are not abused nor have care withheld from them. They are going to have a tough enough time in this world remaining faithful so why would I try to muck up the works. It's like trying to teach them to eat properly and putting Big Macs, Whoppers, cheese cakes, French fries and broccoli in front of them and saying, "choose" having never explained the benefits or detriments of any of it. What do you think they'd "chose."

I don't think it's intellectually lazy. I think the idea of creation(not the 4000 year bullshit) is every bit as valid as a mysterious big bang.

I think evolution is a reality. I don't believe that God put everything into place the way it is...I think he planted the seeds of life and let it grow....he's eternal....he has plenty of time....and speaking of which.....I also believe that we may not be the first or last of his creations. I think that the probability of life elsewhere in even our own galaxy is inevitable. There may be new worlds being made as we speak. Obviously....I don't know for a fact....the only way I will know is when I die. If I die and there's nothing...I guess I was wrong. If I die and there is an afterlife(which is what I believe) it'll be the next step in my journey...I'm cool with that notion.

In short, I don't think there's a conflict at all between science and religion. I think religion has done a shitty job in embracing science though....but I think that's more about power than it is about faith.

When I was a little kid, I went to a neighbor's house for "the Good News Club"....sweet little old lady ran it. I went to exactly one meeting. I remember to this day what she was telling us.....that dinosaur bones were put into the ground by the Devil to make us believe in science instead of God. Even at that young age, I could smell bullshit.

As long as you teach them about all of man's religions and that different people believe different things. And then let them choose for themselves.

I disagree. I will teach my kids my faith. If they want to learn about others, that's what Social Studies are for....different forms of government, different cultures, different religions. If another religion grabs their attention...they are free to pursue it...AFTER they leave my home.

This is an example of pure lunacy and Christianity at its worst. It further reinforces my conviction that all religion is a plague. However, much to your chagrin, it does not even remotely compare to the insanity of fundamentalist Islam.

I'm not exactly sure how I (or one) was suppose to find this story. Admittedly I worked all day and went to dinner (with a Giants player who the restaurant comped, it's good to be famous) so I didn't get a chance to look for it but had I found the story I would have disapproved of the parents actions.

NY or SF?

SF, in fact they live in PA in the off season.

Cool stuff. The closest I've ever gotten was when my Mom worked for the Department of Health....she used to Survey Polk Center and there was an Administrator at Polk who lived close to Mark Malone..I was a young teenager....13, I believe and my mom took me along, paid for my room(adjoining door), because it wouldn't have been ethical for me to stay in a hotel paid by taxpayers...and we met up with the administrator after work and we shared a meal with him. It was cool for a 13 year old Steelers fan....even though he never really amounted to anything.

That was the only time I ever met any personality on a personal level. I've been to Latrobe for training camp a few times and spoke some words to some players...and I shook Jack Ham's hand once when.he was at our mall for a signing session....but that's it.

"Christian nutters strike again..."

With billions of Christians everyday receiving medical treatment, I dont think this has anything to do with Christianity. I cant think of a single verse in the bible that supports such beliefs.
