3-Year-Old Colorado Boy Dies From Accidental Gunshot

A 3-year-old Colorado boy has died after what authorities say was "an accidental gunshot wound to the head."

Police in Frederick, Colo., a town about 30 miles north of Denver, said Tuesday that the boy has been identified as Sheine Steine, according to the Longmont Times-Call.

"We have no reason to believe this was other than an accidental firing of the gun while the child handled it," Frederick Police Chief Gary Barbour said in a statement.

Police arrived at the boy's home Monday morning around 10 a.m. after Steine's mother Dione Warren found him on the ground, not breathing and bleeding from the head. Despite the amount of blood, Warren told 911 she thought the boy had fallen and struck his head on a bedside table. According to 7News, police found the preschooler's body next to his mother's bed and a semiautomatic handgun next to his head.

Police said that the bullet had ricocheted off the wall, leaving blood spatter evidence behind, and then landed on the bed where it was found.

The boy was rushed to Exempla Good Samaritan Medical Center in Lafayette Monday morning, but was pronounced dead at 11:15 a.m..

KDVR reports that the gun, a .40-caliber Glock, was legally owned by the boy's stepfather, identified as Jeremy McCollem, who was not at home during the shooting.

According to Denver's CBS affiliate, the shooting remains under investigation, with authorities still determining who shot the gun and if the gun was locked up.

The gun owner stepfather is guilty of a crime...reckless endangerment or something. You just do not leave a gun unsecured. Gun safe or other inaccessible container is essential. If you can't afford a gun safe, you can't afford a gun.

I agreed with all of it until I got to the bolded. Vehemently disagree with that.

An exception might be an owner of a single handgun for personal protection, with a concealed carry permit, and that gun is never left unattended. There are no children in the house. The gun is never left in the house with the house empty, where a burglar could break in and easily take it--at which point that gun could begin a whole new deadly crime career. Otherwise I stand by my original comment: If you can't afford a safe, you can't afford a gun.

The absolute worst thing that can happen with an unsecured gun, is what happened here: a child got hold of a gun and died. No kid in the world (boys especially) can resist the temptation of a gun that is left unattended. I don't think I could live with that, and that's why no child will ever have access to a gun in my house without my total supervision...not even my Daisy Red Ryder Carbine!

I am not anti gun. I carry a concealed handgun--a full size striker-fired pistol with 13+1 rounds of jacketed hollow point 230 grain .45acp--all the time, except those places where they are not allowed by law. If I have to leave the gun at home, it is in the gun safe with my other handgun, the AR-15, the 20-gauge shotgun and all my extra ammo. I never leave a gun in my car. That takes planning, but it's worth it. When there are grandchildren over, my concealed handgun is either on my person or locked away. To use less effort to secure my guns would be irresponsible. My behavior is not going to be the cause of a child's death or someone else committing a "gun crime" (as the libs like to call them.)

So if you own a gun that is sometimes not in your possession, then you should own a safe in which to secure it.

This is the price Americans as a group have agreed is worth the value of unfettered absolute access to firearms.

which is not what we have... just more bullshit from idiots who don't understand that no matter what you do, a minority of people will be irresponsible.

In effect it is absolutely what we have. I know we have some regulations, but they are completely without teeth and ineffective. We could make laws that would seriously limit this type of needless death, we simply, as a group, would rather have less inconvenience when we want to buy or keep guns.

An 8-month-old baby boy who drowned in a San Gabriel Valley home had been left unattended in a bathtub with young siblings, according to Los Angeles Sheriff's Department homicide investigators.

Authorities said the infant's mother, who was not identified, was bathing him along with his 1-year-old sister and 2-year-old brother Friday morning when she stepped away for 10 to 15 minutes. When she returned, the baby was face-down in the water and not breathing, Sheriff's Deputy Irys Alvarez said Saturday.

Pure fucking nonsense. What law would you create that would prevent people from being irresponsible?

Its funny one white kid gets killed and you all demand action, meanwhile Chicago had 3 deaths and 12 shootings over the weekend and not one peep from any of you. Oh wait, the victims are all black, never mind.

that is likey the most decent thing I have ever seen you post

then you agree its collateral damage

I believe that irresponsible people can be irresponsible in many ways, with cars, guns, chemicals, food, etc... so yes, accidents will happen due to this. Some accidents lead to death. You cannot legislate away stupidity... you above all should know that.

Plenty, and you are without imagination if you cant some up with some yourself. Compare cars to guns, you cant buy a car (a necessity to live in most parts of America) without all kinds of safety features designed to protect children. We could require more intricate safety locks on guns, we could require fingerprint technology before a safety is released, we could require technology that bullets that have been in a chamber for more than two min's are deactivated. We could make the triggers more difficult to pull, so they require more strength and a 3 year old typically has.

These are just a few that I came up with on my own in a matter of a few seconds.

False equivalency, but I am willing to bet that there are more regulations regarding bathtub production and instillation than there are for guns.

BTW, I am glad you are back Supercandy. We missed your ability to actually discuss issues.

how about every time you buy a gun someone gives you an anal probe to make sure you don't think with your ass instead of your brain?

notice: this is a joke incase your one of the ones who think with your ass
