What a tribute to Commie Mandela

Well if you were deaf you probably had no idea WTF was going on because the guy they had doing it was a big ole fake.

Now that is freaking hilarious. Only in commie countries could this happen.

Um... South African sign language is entirely different than ASL (American Sign Language). So, if you were deaf and expected a South African translator to speak in ASL you were mistaken. My bet is they used the British Sign Language which is actually quite different (since that was the English they learned from, ya know...) If they were using "International Sign Language" then they spoke in French Sign Language, which is different again from both ASL and BSL....

I was watching the Beeb earlier and they had a South African signer watching the video, he couldn't make any sense of it either.

ASL is actually based on French Sign Language. British Sign Language is entirely unrelated. This is because the Brit's wouldn't let the American researchers in on British Sign Language, so they had to go to France.

English is "based" on German and Latin, but that doesn't mean you would understand either language. French sign language is a different language than ASL (which I speak).

But ASL and FSL are more different from BSL than they are from each other. I am looking at this from a linguistic perspective, not a language learners one.

I'm not saying that this dude wasn't fake, I'm just noting that he may have simply been using a different form of Sign Language than people were expecting.

All three of those languages are different, but of the languages, if he was actually a translator rather than a fake, he'd be speaking one of those. It would be very unlikely he'd translate in Russian Sign Language or some other form of sign.

UPDATE: The story is 100% accurate and now the guy says he saw "angels while Obama was speaking".

You can't make this stuff up people

Los Angeles Times ......

[h=1]Schizophrenic served as sign interpreter at Nelson Mandela's memorial[/h]
JOHANNESBURG, South Africa -- The sign language interpreter who stood a few feet from President Obama and other world leaders during Nelson Mandela's memorial service acknowledged Thursday being a schizophrenic with a history of violence.

Thamsanqa Jantjie told South African media he had a full-blown episode while he was standing on the stage during Tuesday's memorial, seeing angels flying into the stadium and hearing voices.

He said he lost concentration and, as panic rose, kept gesturing. “There was nothing I could do. I was alone in a very dangerous situation," he said. "I tried to control myself and not show the world what was going on. I am very sorry, it’s the situation I found myself in.”

Opposition leaders and critics called on the government to explain who hired Jantjie.

Hendrietta Bogopane-Zulu, deputy minister for women, children and people with disabilities, said a mistake had been made using Jantjie and that the owners of SA Interpreters, the company that provided him, had "vanished into thin air."
