Im sure the defense will be we need another corporate tax cut so they wont do this. Sorry conservatives wont wash, they got a big corporate tax cut and still kept doing it. You cant blame obama , because they started this tax swindle in 1999

The middleclass has shrunk by 1/5th, the poor has grown by 40% and the top 2% have gotten fabulously wealthier and STILL the GOP whines incessantly that its medicare medicaid and food stamps and unemployment and trying to raise the minimum wage thats caused this countries malais. They believe the way to fix all this is to put out Paul Ryan budgets ad nausem cutting everything under the sun for all americans and giving the richest and corporate america a tax cut.

WHERES THE TRICKLE DOWN!

Caterpillar Inc. (CAT) avoided paying $2.4 billion in U.S. taxes by shifting profits from a parts business to a subsidiary in Switzerland, according to a report released today by a Senate investigative committee.
The world’s largest maker of construction and mining equipment made a “paper change” starting in 1999 that made the profits of the subsidiary subject to a Swiss tax rate as low as 4 percent, said Senator Carl Levin, a Michigan Democrat who will question company executives at a hearing tomorrow.

“Nothing changed in the real world after that except Caterpillar’s tax bill,” Levin told reporters today. “Caterpillar waved a magic wand to make billions of dollars in U.S. taxes disappear.”

The report makes the point that offshore profit-shifting by U.S. corporations goes beyond the intellectual property maneuvers of technology companies such as Apple Inc. (AAPL) and Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) that have been the subjects of past hearings by Levin and scrutiny from governments in Europe.

According to the report, Caterpillar was able to take a profitable U.S.-based business, change little if anything about its operations and locate it in Switzerland for tax purposes.

The tax structure saves Caterpillar, which is based in Peoria, Illinois, about $300 million a year, or 7.9 percent of 2013 net income.

I'm pretty sure the fact that the US can't tax Swiss companies has been around a lot longer than 1999.....multinationals have been doing this since taxes were invented.....

Not in this fashion, they made their money here in america, then just switched over 80% of their american profits to a swiss created phanthom subsidiary to avoid paying federal taxs. I dont believe both to be the same.

nothing about issues like this will change unless liberals start acknowledging that their revered democrats that they elect to office participate in making this possible.

:rofl2:

So they followed all the U.S. tax laws and the democrats are upset and need to call a hearing to make themselves look like they are doing something about it. Since 1999 they have done nothing, during that time they have had control of both the house and senate, yet passed no laws to change the loopholes.

Awesome!

1999 would be the year I bought Caterpillar at $30 a share. It shot up to over $100 a share, split, and has headed back up to that level again.

Whoo! Caterpillar.

Screw life's losers.

no, if the money had been earned in the US they would have had to pay tax on it.......and, if the Swiss company had paid dividends to Catepillar they would have had to pay tax on it.....

likely, Catepiller sold equipment to company A in Switzerland, who in turn sold them somewhere overseas earning profits....Catepillar paid US taxes on any profits earned selling to company A, but company A is not obligated to pay taxes to the US on any profits it made selling equipment in Switzerland or anywhere else except the US.......

this is just a tip of the iceberg.....if you want the US economy to surge, eliminate all taxes on overseas funds held by US corporations so long as they are used to develop new factories and jobs in the US.....it would likely insert over a trillion dollars into the US economy......

otherwise, when Catepillar decides to build its next factory, it will use the cash it has in Switzerland to build its factory somewhere outside the US.....

So trickle down is intended to pass through the Treasury ? I never knew that. Are the jobs here ? Are more jobs here because less profit got squandered on taxes ? Has all the heavy equipment grown a new logo because cat could no compete ? As i recall cat was an obama darling.
