EU parliament votes for embargo on arms sales to Saudi Arabia

The resolution also turns up the heat on the British government, which has supplied export licences for up to £3bn worth of arms to Saudi Arabia in the last year. The UK has been accused of direct involvement in the bombing campaign through the deployment of UK military personnel to the kingdom.

An earlier draft of the resolution that named and criticised the UK and other EU member states, including France, Spain and Germany, was dropped. The final version said “some EU member states” had continued to authorise transfers of weapons to Saudi Arabia since the violence started, in violation of EU rules on arms control.

Alex Wilks of Avaaz said: “For too long Europe has profited from massive arms sales to Riyadh even while the Saudi regime crushed democracy and human rights across the Middle East. Today the European parliament listened to the people and have for the first time stood firmly against Saudi impunity. Now it’s up to capitals to heed this leadership and stop turning a blind eye to massacres in Yemen.”

The European Parliament is nothing more than an extremely expensive talking shop full of pompous windbags with no real power. Hopefully we will have the sense to leave the sinking ship.

To you maybe, we are heartily sick of the EU and wish to throw off its shackles come June. I voted to stay in last time but realise now that that the aim of the EU is to become a federal superstate controlled from Brussels by the Germans.

The interesting thing about the EU is that all its component states are so vastly different that it is never going to be controlled by any one of them. Its divesity and the memories of two world wars make some of its legislation quite masterful- but that would be lost on any one-eyed pseudo-patriotic clot looking to dive overboard without ever leaving the dock.

The UK has been a wallflower at times and a millstone at others. It's an arms-dealing human rights eroder with its tongue up Zionism's arse. Its treatment of the Calais refugees which its warmongering has helped create is appalling. Its industry has gone and its wealth comes from the sharp- and usually illegal- practices of its financiers , overseas industrial polluters and the selling-off of its people's heritage. Even after 40 years its population doesn't think of itself as European and its just about to vote itself out of a movement that it's never been wholeheartedly part of. Its claim to power comes from the debt-crippled nuclear ' deterrent ' for which the White House holds the launch codes. Its only hope for the future is in European integration and its inherent xenophobia is about to scupper that. You don't have a clue, boyo. You're a mouthpiece for a failed capitalism.

The fact of the matter is we have the most vibrant economy in Europe unlike the French who are hopelessly bankrupt. That is why so many immigrants want to come here. I guess that it's escaped your notice that Belgium just revoked Schengen and has put guards on the French border to stop another Jungle being set up there.

Fuck you sonny, we have had several million immigrants come in since 2004 when that arsehole Blair opened the floodgates to the A8 countries in Eastern Europe. We were the only EU countries to do that apart from Sweden and Ireland, all the others invoked the 10 year transition arrangement which expired in 2014. We have enough now, if you want some then take them. Probably have to ask your mum first though!
