Rebellious Democrats disrupted the House's legislative work on Wednesday, staging a sit-in on the House floor and refusing to leave until they secured a vote on gun control measures. Exasperated Republicans were forced to recess while cutting off the C-Span cameras that showed the protest.

A group of about three dozen Democrats led by Georgia Rep. John Lewis demanded a vote on measures to expand background checks and block gun purchases by some suspected terrorists in the aftermath of last week's massacre in Orlando, Florida, that killed 49 people. It was the worst shooting in modern history.

"No bill, no break," shouted Democrats, who demanded that House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., keep the House in session through its planned weeklong recess next week to debate and vote on gun legislation.

After the sit-in, Rep. Ted Poe, R-Texas, tried to start the House's work at noon. The customary prayer and pledge of allegiance went ahead, but Poe was forced to recess the House when dozens of Democrats stood in the well of the House and refused to leave.

Rep. John Larson, D-Conn., said lawmakers were "calling for the simple dignity of a vote." Joining the protest was Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., who had waged a nearly 15-hour filibuster last week to force votes in the Senate. Those votes failed on Monday night.

I need to correct you my friend. The demalquedacrats could have gotten the ban they requested. All the GOP asked for was a reasonable request of due process and the demalquedacrats said NO to due process

It is clear the demalquedacrats just want an election year issue and do not want to solve a problem.
 
If Paul Ryan had balls, he would lock the traitorous demalquedacrats in and cut off the lights and electricity to the chamber. No food, no water and no communication. They would come crying in 12 hours

this is why at least on this one issue conservatives are wise to liberal tactics. We know they aren't being honest when they say they just want "background checks." You give them an inch and they'll take a mile. Got a speeding ticket? No gun. Restraining order ever filed against you even though anyone can do that for anyone reason? No gun. etc

I'm allfor people power,but not messing around with an already dysfunctional Congress.
Whatever the merits of a vote or not -the House is a body that needs parliamentarian rules to function.
Stunts like this can only lead to more stunts,and then you have a body that cannot function

good grief. street demonstrations do not belong in the halls of government - that's not a representative democracy at all

Another post totally devoid of fact or knowledge.

The house these days is like a library compared to previous centuries and yes, there are indeed parlimentary rules.
The Dems were utilizing them.
To be clear I do not support the Dems.

They should go along with the Pubes and provide due process to those on secret lists.
It is their innate love of power (totalitarianism) which prevents them from acting reasonable, therefore they will be equally at fault after the next shooting commited by a watch list member.

Nancy Pelosi did just the same thing when the Republicans pulled the same kind of stunt in 2008. She closed things down and had reporters forcibly removed. Sorry to blow up your false sense of histoire

The typical mindset by Liberals. If they don't do what we want we won't let them do anything else. It's like the little kid that throws a hissy fit and says he's going to hold his breath until he gets what he wants. Fine. Eventually he'll start breathing automatically when he passes out.
