Elon Musk, the Chief Executive of electric car maker Tesla, unveiled a surprise new vehicle on Thursday night - a roadster that he said would be the "fastest production car ever" made.

Capable of going from 0-60 mph in 1.9 seconds, the Tesla Roadster would be the first such car ever to break the two second mark, the entrepreneur said at a launch near Los Angeles.

He also said it would climb from 0 to 100 mph in 4.2 seconds and clear a quarter mile in 8.9 seconds. "This will the first time that any production car has broken 9 seconds in the quarter mile," he said

Elon Musk is a brilliant engineer and industrialist; and btw, also literally a "rocket scientist". He's an asset to the nation, if not all humanity.

And while muscle-cars might seem passé to some, an all electric muscle car seems like a fun idea.
One of the thrills to a muscle-car enthusiast is the throaty growl of the engine.
An all electric muscle-car would write a new chapter on that.

In addition, there is some political stir about making electric cars noisier, because some pedestrians don't hear them, particularly in urban environments, (a persuasive argument against jay walking).

Interesting to see how all that plays out.

But in addition to not meeting U.S. safety or pollution standards, they also bog down going uphill. And Americans are too impatient for that.

In addition, running most automotive engines at full throttle all the time tends to wear them out quicker. They last longer if they're not at their limit most of the time.

For emergencies.

To give stranded motorists additional communications options, in a breakdown, collision, or other emergency.

For directions, or other information (nearest restaurant, fuel station, hotel, etc.)

Cars are much safer today than they were just a few decades ago.
It's more than just the collapsible steering column, seatbelts, and air-bags. It's also:
radial tires instead of bias ply
4 wheel power disc brakes
anti-lock brakes
stability control

In my lifetime, stopping distance have been cut nearly in half by these multiple incremental advancements. Yet the posted speed limits don't change.

Manufacturers prefer their $money up front, selling cars better designed to avoid crashes, than causing them.

Electric allows that to happen. On demand instant full power. As efficient as exotic sports cars are, they can't match it. Anyone with a decent power drill knows why.

Those Top Fuel engines are producing in excess of 10,000 horsepower now.
The redline is 8500 RPM, too.
Also, they only run 1000 feet, not the traditional 1320 (ever since Scott Kalitta was killed).

I don't have a date, or source for the above, but found it interesting when I originally found it, however dated it may be. Any idea how long ago it was originally written?

The obvious question is, in the foreseeable future, will there ever be a self-contained electric (meaning not connected by cable to a nuclear power plant) that can beat such racers?

I'm guessing, with current battery technology, the energy density is simply too low.

In New York State there are handgun registration requirements which vary.
In NYC they're reportedly very strict, rendering it almost impossible to obtain one.

In rural NY (most of NY is rural) handgun permits may be more easily obtained, though I don't know the details among the many varied jurisdictions.

I gather it's often handled at county level by the sheriff's department, perhaps in conjunction with the State Police.

And long guns can involve licensure as well, as hunting in New York generally requires a hunting license; and such license can even be specific to the type of weapon:
bow
crossbow
muzzle loader
conventional center-fire
small game (which can include rim-fire)

There's a separate category for trapping, and legal exceptions for farmers / bee wranglers, if bears are destroying their colonies.
