jan 17 2018 A college student who posted a video of her racist ranting to social media on Martin Luther King Jr. Day has been expelled from the University of Alabama, school officials said Wednesday.

Harley Barber, a 19-year-old freshman from Marlton, N.J., recently posted two videos to her “fake” Instagram — the secret, secondary account many teenagers use to show their authentic, less polished selves — of her spewing language that sparked outrage both on her campus and across the country as the videos went viral.

“We do not waste water . . . because of the poor people in Syria,” she said in the first video, standing in front of a bathroom sink. “I love how I act like I love black people,” she said, before using racial slurs.

A second video was posted Monday in response to people who were upset by the language she used in the first. She threatened those who wanted to report her fake Instagram account to her sorority, Alpha Phi, for using racist language. She said she “doesn’t care if it’s Martin Luther King Day” before repeating a racial slur more than half a dozen times.

TDAK aside this is an interesting situation. I saw this story yesterday and that she had been kicked out of her sorority but didn't know she had been kicked out of school.

I ask this for the sake of discussion. Is kicking her out the best option? This seems like a teachable moment where you have someone who messed up but it could be turned into something good long term. So is expulsion the best way to get there?

(again just asking for discussion)

The idea that blacks are offended by the word ni**er is more fake news from the media. Blacks use the word all the time so obviously they are not offended.

You're right. Black folks LOVE when people like you and CFM drop the n*bomb. In fact you should say it to the next brother you see.

they heaved her dumb fucking drunken racists ass to the curb

yet more proof how much the world hates fucking racists huh you fucking racist

I wonder if she was being a vile racist in private around her sorority sisters, but they only felt "obligated" to kick her out once it got in public and tarnished the reputation, the public relations image, of the sorority.

I would like to think people try to stand on principle, regardless of the situation, regardless if it happens in private or in public. But I am actually not sure if they do.

Really, when you think about it, if this girl was being racist in private with the sorority sisters, they should have kicked her out long before the sorority got a black eye from a public performance of deplorable racism.

Yes it appears blacks do love the word "ni**er" since they use it all the time themselves!! How do you explain that? THINK, white-hating racist.

What that girl did was reprehensible. That being said, hate speech is still protected free speech, especially if her conduct isn't affiliated with the university. She was very wrong to use that language, but the university should not have expelled her for it.

Her mother kicked her out of the house before she left for college. She seems very embarrassed by her daughters actions.
So, it appears this young lady has issues.

This much publicity over the issue, it was the only option. They do not want their institution associated with this type of behavior, she was warned by friends not to post the video, she did it, anyway.

I don't know if you ever attended college, but every university has a Student Code of Conduct policy.

Sanctions and prohibitions against bullying, harassment or verbal abuse on the basis of race is codified in the University of Alabama's Coded of Student Conduct policy.

Of course, students have obligations in addition to their rights. As members of an academic community, students must observe rules that benefit their classmates, their community, and their University. Students must practice personal integrity. By so doing, they respect the dignity, rights, and property of others. The University has a vital interest in the character of its students and, therefore, regards behavior at any location (on-campus or off-campus) as a reflection of a student’s character and fitness to be a member of the student body. The Code of Student Conduct thus creates an expectation of behavior that the University deems acceptable. By fulfilling these expectations, students can enjoy their own rights, while also respecting the rights of others and furthering the University’s goals.
