18 years ago. Suburb of St. Louis, MO. Two work buddies, working moms who didn't make much money, both drove old beaters to work. One buddy was white, the other black. They both had a 15-mile commute, from opposite directions. One lost her muffler on a gravel country road with a big divot in it; the other lost hers to a pothole on her suburban street. Neither had the money to get the mufflers fixed right away. Within a week both were pulled over by the local cops by the place of employment. One was just told by the young man to get that fixed because the law says you got to have a muffler. The other got a $35 ticket for not having a muffler.

A college campus goes on lock down because a black student was working on an art project. Remarkable. I really don't think if a white girl was carrying a glue gun for an art project the campus would have gone on lock down, but that's just my guess.

I really do not know how, in good conscience anyone can deny systematic and institutional racism exists in this country, and gives unfair advantage to certain demographics. But you know what? There is a lot of denial going on out there!

I believe the campus was on lock down for a report of a gun...not a glue gun.

'Other' lethal objects are the up close and personal kind of thing. People tend to feel they've got a better chance of not being killed.

As I noted previously, the reports are he was carrying a glue gun for an art project. Art classes are a real thing in universities, and hundreds if not thousands of white kids at Colgate university have taken art classes and some, or even many, undoubtedly have walked around campus with glue guns over the years and decades.

My guess is that racial profiling led to the panic. It fits the bill.

Is it possible that racial profiling played zero role? That of the thousands of art students that have undoubtedly walked around campus with glue guns, it was mere coincidence that a black kid somehow was the impetus for the glue gun panic?

Yes, of course that could be a possibility.

Actually, what I have learned from my message boarding adventures is that conservatives, almost to a man, will not only deny this nation has a lingering and festering problem of institutional race and gender bias; and deny malignant racial profiling is widespread....but they will go on to claim that white men are the ones who are victims of discrimination.

That kind of rightwing logic is an unmistakable sign of brain damage...at least to me.

No genius, I'm pointing out the FACT that the young lady pointed too...DESPITE her public display, no one called the cops, no official (security, faculty) reported her. Bottom line, WHITE FOLK...students, campus cops, faculty saw a black man with what looked like a gun and went off, but a white kid with a sword is okay. It's called pre-conceived notions, you dunce...also known as prejudice.

No argument there. Given that almost all mass shooters are white, we can only speculate as to what the outcome would have been if the guy running with the glue gun was white.

I don't argue with the girl's premise. I just don't buy the totality of her claims about herself.

Yes. On message boards, because everyone's really brave when they can hide. IRL, if a conservative made the claim, you could intelligently discuss the topic with them, and simply use their own anecdotes as proof that they are wrong.

There are many accounts of white people with guns on campus, with the same exact result...a lock down with several dead or injured.

I do not believe anyone asked you to feel guilty about your skin. I could not be prouder of my ethnic heritage - which unfortunately leaves me encumbered with pale, almost translucent white skin. And I take steps to honor and incorporate my cultural, ethnic, and linguistic heritage into my life.

What liberals on this thread are talking about, if I could presume to speak for them, are issues of fairness and justice. Now, I am not speaking to you personally, but in 15 years of message boarding, it has become crystal clear to me that any talk of fairness, equality, and justice are basically an anathema to message board conservatives.

Will you voluntarily give your job to a more deserving “person of color”?

That is a good question. The story in the OP is meaningless. There is no real comparison between a girl with a sword and a man with a "gun".

Furthering the point that this was about "gun" versus sword, not race. The girl who wrote the story is intellectually dishonest, or just an ignoramus.

Fair enough.
We simply do not have enough information to be dead certain about what actually happened.
There is not question that young white, college age males get profiled too. When I was 17 years old, the cops would stop me and ask questions...just seeing what I was up to! That does not seem to happen anymore! I can only imagine the trouble I could have gotten into as a young man if I wore hoodies and carried boxes of skittles around......
