He directly insulted a huge group of people, including thousands of vets like myself. Nobody needs to believe the insult to be true in order to be offended, but it was clear that McCain meant what he said. Trump's comments on McCain made my day.

Btw, McCain's status as a hero was called into question by the left long before the press capitalized on Trump's blunder.

No one has said anything different; but are you allowed to protest at your work, on a continual basis or do you need to do it on your own time and your own dime?

He doesn't. He fit's more with the wannabe Christians, that are all about old testament condemnation, and usually shame the teachings of Christ. Telling someone they are going to hell is a huge no no, but here he is saying it. You will be judged, how you judge others. Some of the words he's used before, would get the stink eye from most church goers I know.
