Teaching science, technology, engineering and mathematics is not enough.

No shit, nothing about math or science provides critical thinking skills. They provide intelligent robot skills. You need both humanities and science. We shouldn’t want Philistinism nor pie sky ineffectualism. We want an ethical, healthy and productive society. Neither solely utilitarian technocrats nor theorists and philosophers can produce both. I do think the country needs more engineers and science training now though, whereas there was a glut of the in the 1980s for example.

Having run across a profusion of engineers and scientists who cannot write, and an overabundance of humanities majors who cannot do math, I have begun to realize that the classic seven liberal arts as taught in a classic European liberal education (rhetoric, logic, grammar, math, geometry, astronomy, music) should never have been artificially split into two-stand alone academic schools of knowlege, aka what we have today - a STEM focus, and a Humanities focus - and never the two shall meet!

Life experience has taught me that writing, rhetoric, public speaking are every bit as important as knowledge of scientific and engineering principles. That is why I will never join with people who want to dogpile and demean the humanities and social science majors. It should all be part and parcel of a well-rounded, classical education. Just my two cents!
