"Make America Rich Again"

Trump desperately is seeking to make America have the economy China currently has - a bloated artifically carcass of low wage manufacturing. China on the other hand is desperately seeking to have the economy that America currently has - a powerful information based economy. They will both get their wish. Trump will shove ignorance down our throat and kill US innovation. Apple will be destroyed. Google next. Facebook next. The conservatives will have their dream, total destruction of silicon valley, the ebil oppressors of totalitarian fascists everywhere who cannot cease calling for genocide against minorities.

Then we'll get to say HI to Tencent. Say HI to Baidu. That's the replacement for the hated Silicon Valley.

Wait, I thought Facebook and google were evil in leftist circles?

The reason I'm making it a blue/red thing is because it's historically true. Conservatives have historically been for free trade. And many of those people who supported free trade and would rightly go after any Democrat slapping tariffs on industry like Trump is but instead are supporting Trump doing it.

As beloved as Reagan is the man had his flaws as all Presidents do and he put tariffs on some industries. But at least his rhetoric was one of free trade. He never declared himself Mr. Tariff Man or tariffs would make America rich because they don't.

Before Trump- No one- Democrat or Republican wanted tariffs and Free Trade has been the standard for a very long time now.

So please, this "Hooray for my side" crap is exactly just that!

You're never going to be able to make the world such where the Chinese don't exist. You can barr them from the US all you want, but that doesn't take them out of the economy. It just gives others who do trade with them a comparitive advantage. What a fool you are.

It is the decision of the US rightists to poison wage growth and kill unions. That's not the fault of the Chinese. It's not the fault of the Chinese that America hates their own workers.

China has a massive advantage over the millions of Consumers in India and the rest of Asia, we (the US) are at a disadvantage. Like Sperm, we want our best Western Values to be part of the Future.

How many obnoxious capitalization can you use fascist? China will one day be a world power, and the world will be better off in the absence of totalitarian US control. While the US keeps grasping at straws and seeking to spit on China out of spite, China will barely even notice. America could have a graceful fall from power, or America could choose to do what it always does, be the bully simply because someone else is getting the attention for a bit. America chose the latter. America will hasten its fall. The world will be a better place once China is at the helm and the totalitarian US fascists are put to bed. Then we can have a socialist revolution and remove all the fascist rightists that have been holding us back. The leeches.

China closes off the 'Outside World' from it's Citizens. No open Internet, no G-mail, no international Newspapers. Is THAT what you want?

Fuck That, Cisco. Move to China. you might be happier there?

There are ways to go after China and slapping taxes on American consumers isn't how to do it.
with due respect....there ARE no other ways to go..
we've tried getting WTO to enforce,China makes noise they will and then they won't.
China makes promises to reform in principle, they will not committ. then they default

I'm going top put you on the spot - maybe you know something - I don't but what else works?

Did you completely miss the Bernie Sanders campaign during the primary??

And here's a quote from progressive Cypress in 2007 regarding U.S. job loses to China:

You think this was an accident, or somehow all unintentional?

This was exactly what the wall street republicans, and corporate-sponsored Dems had in mind when the passed NAFTA, WTO, and China MFN.

A downward pressure on labor costs and wages in the United States.

People like Cawacko, Damocles, and Stuperfreak actually bought into the nonsense that William F Buckley, Ronald Reagan, George Bush, and Alan Greenspan were actually valiantly trying to improve the status, power, and wage potential of america's working middle class. Is it possible to be any more foolish that to believe scions of the conservative movement and america's rich investor were invested in improving the power and status of Joe and Jane working class american?

China IS a worldpower . they got a $12 trillion economy, and they are building up all areas of defense..
Even their BRI is about dominance, and they aren't about to run any world order that isn't exclusively for China First.

There is nothing not totalitarian about China..you really need to put down the rose colored glasses and burn
that Little Red Book once and for all.

The Communist Party is ruthless. "fascist" doesn't begin to describe their penal system' the treatment of the Uigers. It's an Orwellian state. "totalitarian dystopia by government control and subjugation of the people"

better. China certainly has every right to move to a high tech based society.
But the need to do it without stealing our IPR and by industriall espionage

Bernie Sanders is a nice likeable kind of guy, but no, I didn't pay much attention to him while he was running for president.

William Buckley? What an elitist! He was always one of those "I got mine- FUCK YOU" kind of idiots.

Bush Jr.? About the only thing he did for the poor was initiate a first Time Home buyers program, that ended up bankrupting banks that were too big too fail!

Ronald Reagan wanted the poor to eat the rich man's shit! LOL! Feed the rich and let the poor man eat shit! Reagonomics in a nutshell!

Alan Greenspan? The housing bubble was growing to ever more dangerous proportions (2002-2006). But the Fed did nothing to curb the bubble. Arguably, it even acted to foster its growth with Greenspan cheering the development of exotic mortgages and completely ignoring its regulatory responsibilities. He was just as drunk as George Bush!

Ok, you completely missed the point about free trade and what we were discussing.

Sanders could have maybe beaten Trump in 2016. Hillary had too many negatives, and had no party enthusiasm.

But now I'd love to see a socialist go up against Trump - Trump would eat them up on the economy.
Sanders was also clueless about foreign policy as well.

His lone attraction is income inequality; but most Americans still understand
the way to raise worker standard of living goes right along with making the rich richer.

The world is flat. world economies are not a zero sum game, but there sure can be winners and losers.
America First means we aren't going to lose again

Do certain individuals get hurt by free trade? Yes, they do. Our country can set up programs to try and assit them if need be. But on the whole free trade brings about greater economic growth and increased access to goods at lower prices. That benefits all Americans. Tariffs may help a select few while doing harm to all.

Your OP was essentially correct on the change of roles of the two parties. Probably proving most of all that there's no real distinction. But a useful conversation has sprung up on China's behaviour, complete with the standard whining by one faction and the condemnation of China by the other.

None of which will make any difference to China's behaviour in the least. China is not militarily the strongest country in the world but it's left the US far behind in it's economic clout.

Walmart is America's largest corporation

Walmart's profit is about 40%

Over 85% of goods sold at Walmart are made in China.

Walmart's average wage is about $11.

China can do it for $2 an hour or less.

China needs to shut America down for a few days to teach a lesson in humility.

(some of my figures are updating guesses so welcome to anybody who wants to take a shot at them)

Ok, you completely missed the point about free trade and what we were discussing.

You brought those people up! So, I had a couple of things to say about them.

You asked about Bernie Sanders! I answered you!

And I have made several comments about Free Trade in this thread already.

No need for anyone to be insulting anyone really!

China is not practicing free trade. even the G-20 agrees.
Tariffs are the mechanism to try to crash thru their trade barriers as well as their IPR theft, etc.

When only one party is practicing free trade—then it’s not really free trade.

Hello cawacko,

Where to even begin with this tweet from Trump:

I am a Tariff Man. When people or countries come in to raid the great wealth of our Nation, I want them to pay for the privilege of doing so. It will always be the best way to max out our economic power. We are right now taking in $billions in Tariffs. MAKE AMERICA RICH AGAIN

Tariffs are taxes. Is his 2020 slogan going to be "I Am The Tax Man"? Any Democrat who ran on this would rightly get laughed at. But because Trump calls himself a Republican this is somehow now acceptable?

It was always liberals and unions that wanted tariffs previously to protect their industries and conservatives who supported free trade because that's where growth comes from. It's maddening watching this change take place and seeing conservatives accept these tariffs as good economics.

It's not working. If Trump thinks he's making America rich? It's not working.

US debt is SOARING.

$21.829 TRILLION and rising!

Hello You thought it was,

You believe in attacking other nations simply because they're growing. I believe in justice.

If you believe in justice then you should also believe that free trade is not free, and needs to be accompanied by world responsibility.

Unregulated trade, with no barriers, amounts to a race to the bottom. Who can pollute the most? Who can treat their workers the most poorly? Who can have the most dangerous working conditions? Who can produce the most dangerous products that are cheap to make and easy to sell?

Who can convert the most natural resources into the products with the shortest shelf life, and the quickest arrival at the final destination: the landfill. Or worse, simply plastic tossed into the sea.

That is not a competition the nations of the world need to be involved in.

We have to have some ground rules.
