Judge orders Trump accounting firm to hand over records to Congress

Washington (CNN)A federal district judge has told the accounting firm Mazars it will need to turn over Donald Trump's accounting records from before he was President to the Democratic-controlled House Oversight Committee.
In a 41-page opinion, Judge Amit Mehta of the DC District Court rejected Trump's attempt to block the committee's subpoena, asserting that Congress is well within its authority to investigate the President.

Mehta's opinion will now likely become fodder for other judges to consider as Trump and his Cabinet try to hold off Congress from getting his business records, such as through the IRS, banks and in other court fights.
Congress specifically can probe the President for conflicts of interest and ethical questions, Mehta wrote.

"History has shown that congressionally-exposed criminal conduct by the President or a high-ranking Executive Branch official can lead to legislation," Mehta wrote, citing the Watergate investigation by the Senate.

"It is simply not fathomable that a Constitution that grants Congress the power to remove a President for reasons including criminal behavior would deny Congress the power to investigate him for unlawful conduct -- past or present -- even without formally opening an impeachment inquiry," he added.

Mazars has seven days until it will have to comply with the subpoena, Mehta said in his opinion Monday, but the judge refused to halt the subpoena after that. Another court would have to do so. Trump's team has not yet appealed the ruling.

"The court is well aware that this case involves records concerning the private and business affairs of the President of the United States. But on the question of whether to grant a stay pending appeal, the President is subject to the same legal standard as any other litigant that does not prevail," Mehta wrote.

This fucking moron should be impeached. Obama appointee, shocker.

A president can simply refuse to honor it, as he can refuse to obey a judicial order. Separation of powers and there’s not a darned thing the judges can do about it.
They are ordering the firm that has them, not him....

Which I'm sure he will do, as he has done with all the other requests plus banned anyone past or present from his staff to talk to anyone, all of which adds to the Democrats' case of further obstruction.

The Democrats will keep requesting and Trump will keep refusing, eventually, public opinion will begin to ask why, why can't Trump deliver anything, which given his already disclosed history of hiding information for personal reasons will build to the Democrat's case

Trump ( or any President) is just a common citizen. Same with every politician. They are not above the law supposedly. What is interesting to me about all this though is politicians no longer think things through long term in an effort for immediate "gotcha" of a political foe. That always comes back and bite them in the ass later. Once this can of worms is opened, every politician demanding Trumps tax returns will in fact find out they are as vulnerable as he might be. Just my thoughts.

Exactly. If they can see Trump's finances, then they can also see Pelosi's.

Perhaps they will be just as vulnerable, I am fine w/ that... IMHO they prob should all be investigated.. I think that would be something we could all agree on??

No, because it opens up to petty discussions that have nothing to do with domestic or foreign policy. You know, the stuff that the administration and legislators are supposed to be working on?

Trump isn't just a common citizen, he is President, and according to Barr and his Justice Dept he can't be indited, so how is he not above the law?

And Americans want to see Trump's income tax returns, the longer he keeps obstructing, the more they believe he is hiding something, the "I'm being audited" facade ain't working

He sure is just a common citizen who was elected President. Once again every politician is. Folks like you need to stop making them into something they are not. That is one the reasons this country is getting fucked up so quickly.

You're welcome to you opinion, you know mine now.... :| I have zero problem w/ them getting some scrunity, starting out w/ a simple piss test like some of them want others to take... Not much to ask is it??;)

This is why I am on onboard with this. All of our politicians make laws and decisions we have to live and abide by. Somewhere along the line, they have put themselves above those laws. They went from common citizens doing things for the benefit of other common citizens to they are royalty and we are serfs. Screw that.
