Fewer and fewer, thanks to the efforts of generations of activists. But, not long ago, a gay person could be imprisoned simply for having sex with the person he loves. And more recently than that, a gay person couldn't get legally married to the person he loves. And, even now, a gay person in a number of states can be fired, or denied housing, simply for being gay.

We've come a long way, with gay activists dragging the bigots kicking and screaming each step of the way. They have much to be proud of, don't you think?

I agree with most of the above. I don't think it was necessarily hate that was the problem rather than religious intolerance. I grew up Catholic. Was taught that homosexuality was a sin, but as we are all sinners, they too could redeem themselves. That we should love them and try to help them.

As I grew older, the stupidity of that argument became clearer. I think our generation was more open minded and less strict with old school, more puritanical, teachings. Add in the pedophile priest debacle and the 'word' of the church was less relevant. I personally left the church at that time. There are many that still have very homophobic mindsets, more fear and hate than anything. There are also those that still think it is wrong in the eyes of God. While I disagree with that, I do respect their beliefs as long as they don't try to force others to believe as they do.

To say rednecks is where you will find the hatred may be true, but you can also find it in Islamic communities, black communities etc...

One note... this may shock you a bit... but there are a lot of black rednecks too.

Well, there was a time when it was perfectly legal to discriminate against gays in areas like employment and housing.

The only reason it is no longer legal, is because they stood up and made a lot of noise about it.

The people who discriminated against them didn't just change their minds on their own.

You have the right to live anywhere in the US you want without the risk of being fired or denied housing for your sexuality (assuming you're heterosexual). A gay person doesn't.
