The big myth about socialism goes like this:
'Ya have to choose between socialism and capitalism because you can't have both together.'
WRONG!
We, and most industrialized nations, have had socialism mixed with capitalism ever since WWII.
Our great American middle class was built with the mixture of capitalism and socialism.
Capitalism built great American fortunes and socialism prevented the poorest from falling through the cracks, giving them the dignity to allow many to rise to wealth and build their own future.

Fact is Scandanavian people are not coming here. America is a big country with lots of jobs. That provides an opportunity for desperate people to better themselves and send money back home. They do not come here for medical care and safety nets. It is just poor country people who are coming here. The well off don't want to move to this shooting gallery. They wonder why we tolerate the wealth gap.

Back in the day w/ almost free college, cheap rents, cheap gas & good union wages or wages partially lifted by them it was oh so tuff, even a kid w/ no education could get a decent gig, & his own apartment.....
But they earned it
Times are different & the situation has changed, especially since they farmed out 60,000 factories to the communist party in red china & zillionares got tax breaks after tax breaks & corporations that don't even make anything here don't pay taxes either........
We already have federal funding of presidential nominations and elections. I haven't seen any difference in how the system operates.

There are ppl that come here LEGALLY from India as an example on h1 B visas & they have superior educations & are very intelligent tax paying.
(I wonder why Americans refuse to take these high paying jobs in Silicon Valley & Massachusetts??)
The story always goes that someone came from a shithole country & is now making jobs here~which is all true, but leave out the millions that did not..
The situation isn't simple..
Many of those ppl that come here w/ few if any skills are exploited to a shameful degree as there are industries that have developed on the fringes of our society specifically to prey upon them....
& yet they believe it is still better to live like that, than where they came...
The rich are not going to take care of those that need services?? Corporations certainly are not.....

Oh, for sure. Been saying it for years. It never seems to move the needle. It's like it was never said. I'll say it and then have a conservative immediately argue that we don't want socialism to replace capitalism. Doesn't matter if I point out that we've had both mixed for decades and that hasn't happened yet - even back when America 'was great,' whenever that was, presumably in the 50's and early 60's.
I am so glad I am not starting out again. The work I've done in the past doesn't exist here any more. I found niches, seized opportunity, rode it out, saw it eliminated, found another niche, rode that out, saw it eliminated too. Realized it was all part of a big pattern by capitalism to eliminate labor costs as much as possible wherever possible. What that means is that if an adept individual seeks well-paying unique jobs, they will be short-lived and 'in the sights' of capitalism to be eliminated one way or another. They just don't cease. It used to be so easy to make it in this world. I just don't see that level of opportunity these days.
I sure did it my way while I could.
But hey. At least the rich got richer. What good that does is unclear. They were already the richest people in the nation, living in total luxury, pretty much anything they want, more money than they could spend. So now what? They have more to leave to their heirs? What good did that do them, again? And for the heirs? The need to make their own way has been removed. What's left? Greed to expand the family fortune? Well, we know how that works. Eliminate even more labor costs...
I've been thinking of starting a thread on H-2B visas. I watched a Frontline show the other night about the carnival business. It's not what it used to be either. They come to town, set up some rides, the locals go spend a few dollars, the kids get a sugar high and get whipped around on some rides, then they tear it all down and move on to another town. They used to have these people called "carnies." They would do all the work, running the rides, all the set up and tear down, etc. Not anymore. All that work is done by H-2B visa foreigners. Mexicans. They are earning way below minimum wage. But it's all legal. The rides still cost as much. The business owners are making more. No Americans do the work. The wages are sent back home, so they are not getting spent in the USA. It's a pipeline of wealth out of the USA and into Mexico as those American jobs are eliminated. But the American Chamber of Commerce has the nerve to argue it is good for the economy and does not take American jobs. Well, duh, those tasks used to be done by Americans but they aren't any more. How is it possible that did not eliminate American jobs? And the money the Americans used to earn doing that work got spent in the USA. Not so much any more. The workers wire it home instead.

I used to ride by a textile mill on a regular basis. The place had a very large asphalt parking lot. Grass is now growing up right through the pavement. They are going to have to start mowing the paved parking lot.
