Yeh some women wear silk sarongs, my missus has several as a matter of fact. They usually wear them to the temple or somewhere formal. They are called pahsin (ผ้าซิ่น) in Thai.
NOT Formal. For the 'common people'. So simple, so basic, so utilitarian. When you make a knot to tie it, you just gather the extra material at the waist and tie it upon itself.
(Did you ask your wife about 'Sniff Kissing'? I can't wait to hear what she has to say.)
