The "vote for war"

I always argue this, but I absolutely hate how history has been rewritten on the Iraq resolution. From last night's debate:

"BIDEN: With regard to Iraq, I indicated it would be a mistake to -- I gave the president the power. I voted for the power because he said he needed it not to go to war but to keep the United States, the UN in line, to keep sanctions on Iraq and not let them be lifted.

I, along with Dick Lugar, before we went to war, said if we were to go to war without our allies, without the kind of support we need, we'd be there for a decade and it'd cost us tens of billions of dollars. John McCain said, no, it was going to be OK.

PALIN: Oh, yeah, it's so obvious I'm a Washington outsider. And someone just not used to the way you guys operate. Because here you voted for the war and now you oppose the war. You're one who says, as so many politicians do, I was for it before I was against it or vice- versa. Americans are craving that straight talk and just want to know, hey, if you voted for it, tell us why you voted for it and it was a war resolution."

Biden is right, and Palin's characterization is so completely wrong. The resolution was NOT a war resolution; yes, we can give a wink, wink, we all know what it REALLY was, now - but it was not a group of legislators signing up for Bush's war, the way he conducted it, with the timing & the full-scale nature that Bush chose. The mere idea of that is complete bullshit, and I've had it with people so effectively rewriting the history on that period of time.

Yes, they were stupid to trust Bush, and I don't give them a pass on that. But is was NOT how it is now characterized with such ease.

Have at it, rewriters....

they were already amassing troops in the gulf before the vote. they all knew what they were voting for.

Hey--are you the commie that thinks the downing of our trade centers--with thousands dead--should have just been handeled as a pety crime?

Oncie, I am sorry they didn't have a coloring book for this, but the actual name of the resolution was: AUTHORIZATION FOR USE OF MILITARY FORCE AGAINST IRAQ.

Now, I am really not sure what word you have a problem with, but to me, it seems pretty clear what the resolution authorizes. There are no winks or tricks, no spin or distortion, it says in the very title of the resolution, what it's a resolution for. If you or your representatives in Washington were so profoundly stupid to not understand it, when it's right there in black and white, I honestly don't know any way it could have been made more clear. Not to mention the fact, the exact same title was used for a resolution in 1991, and it resulted in the Gulf War.

The amazing thing to me is, how you guys can get away with continuing to claim you were tricked or lied to, misled or hoodwinked by the administration. Here we are, 7 years after the fact, and you are still insisting the resolution was not what the resolution said it was for. Had it been titled; AUTHORIZATION FOR USE OF DIPLOMACY AGAINST IRAQ-- I maybe could see your point, I might could go along with what you are claiming. As it stands, you and the others who continue to make this stupid claim, look like absolute idiots and retards.

Read the resolution, Dix. Read what Dick Armey or any one of dozens of Congresspeople on both sides of the aise said that day, or what the admin was saying in October of 2002.

It's bullshit. You NEED to believe what you argue now, just to sleep at night, but that isn't how it went down, and somewhere deep down, where the koolaid can't soak through to, you know it.

Yep. They can certainly say that technically they did not vote for war, but we all knew what that vote was meant for. It was one of the dominating themes of the 2002 election. It was only months after the invasion started and no WMD turned up that we started to hear the "We never voted for this war" line come in.
If they really didn't vote for the war, then right after it started they should have said that, but they waited to see how WMD search (and justification) would end up.

And once again the democratic appologists are at it - including Biden.

Anyone who claims they did not know the authorization granted would be used is either too fucking stupid to be a congress critter, or is a flat out fucking liar.

Anyone who BELIEVES those who claim they did not know what voting for the resolution would result in are brain dead idiots. (Or flat out fucking liars.)

It's very simple. Those who TRULY opposed invading Iraq voted AGAINST the resolution. Those who voted for it were either in favor of invading Iraq, OR were a bunch of pandering vote sluts.

Biden was a pandering vote slut. He, and those like him, COULD have stopped the resolution from passing. They did not, and they knew very well what the results of passing the resolution would be. But popular opinion was more important to them than standing on principle. The fucking bunch of them should be fired. (ie: not reelected.)

Yeah, you should just vote for McCain, they're all the same.

Well, Bush gave plenty of assurances about what he did & did not plan to do with the authorization. He gave them to members of his own party in private & in public.

I notice that the ones who tend to ridicule the idea that it wasn't a 'vote for war' tend to be the same posters who I'm fairly certain voted for Bush twice. In making the argument about the resolution, you're basically saying Bush is a flat-out liar who no Congressperson should have trusted and who was intent on deceiving them.

Cool; thanks for the lecture about that NOW....

If we wait for the danger to become clear, it could be too late.
Sen. Joseph Biden D-Del., September 4, 2002

Guess the warmongering, right-wing extremist politician that is responsible for these quotes:

"...left unchecked, Saddam Hussein would in short order be in a position to threaten and blackmail our regional allies, our troops, and, indeed, our nation."

"As long as Saddam's at the helm, there is no reasonable prospect [that] . . . any . . . inspector is ever going to be able to guarantee that we have rooted out . . . the entirety of Saddam's [WMD] program."

"If we wait for the danger from Saddam to become clear, it could be too late."

"the only way we're going to get rid of Saddam Hussein is we're going to end up having to start it alone . . . . It's going to require guys . . . in uniform to be back on foot in the desert taking Saddam down."

"I do not believe this is a rush to war. I believe it is a march to peace and security.
. . . [Saddam Hussein] possesses chemical and biological weapons and is seeking nuclear weapons."

If you guessed George W. Bush and his fearmongering Republicans, you're slightly off.

If you guessed Joseph Biden, you are correct.
