Drugmaker Moderna Inc. has shipped the first batch of its rapidly developed coronavirus vaccine to U.S. government researchers, who will launch the first human tests of whether the experimental shot could help suppress the epidemic originating in China.

Moderna on Monday sent vaccine vials from its Norwood, Mass., manufacturing plant to the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases in Bethesda, Md., the company said. The institute expects by the end of April to start a clinical trial of about 20 to 25 healthy volunteers, testing whether two doses of the shot are safe and induce an immune response likely to protect against infection, NIAID Director Anthony Fauci said in an interview. Initial results could become available in July or August.

Moderna’s turnaround time in producing the first batch of the vaccine—co-designed with NIAID, after learning the new virus’s genetic sequence in January—is a stunningly fast response to an emerging outbreak.

The chances of the first attempt at a vaccine working would normally be very low. There is evidence of a viral load after infection, so with this virus the chances might be even lower. There will be initial testing, and then more testing, and finally manufacturing. All that takes time.

And then there is trying to get everyone who is in danger vaccinated. Vaccinations are a social cure for disease, not an individual cure. Republicans are going to spread rumors and lies about this vaccine like all the others. Herd immunity will be very difficult to get.

Mapping the genome does not do much good. RNA is one dimensional, while proteins are four dimensional. Converting from one to four is such a difficult problem that we simply do not have the computers to solve it yet.

trump is FAILING. he has cut the CDC budget, and many of our best minds have left the CDC. he put someone who does not even believe in evolution in charge of fighting this evolution problem. It all is showing. The tests the USA has for infections are not working. The quarantine of patients was poorly handled, and we are seeing infections being spread from the quarantine base.

Maybe we will get lucky... But how many times can we count on luck? trump is not magical, and he is unwilling to work. Sooner or later that will mean a big problem. Lets hope we can get him out of office before that happens.
