Crowds flock to reopened Jacksonville beaches as Florida hits record coronavirus case

Mayor Lenny Curry reopened beaches and parks in Jacksonville, Florida on Friday, after Governor Ron DeSantis gave the green light for them to reopen, despite the state hitting a record number of coronavirus cases. When they opened at 5 p.m., crowds flooded the area, ignoring social distancing warnings.

Jacksonville Beach, Neptune Beach and Atlantic Beach are now open from 6-11 a.m. and 5-8 p.m. for "essential activities." They are closed during all other times.

More than 25,000 people in Florida have been infected with COVID-19, and schools, business and public events are all closed or canceled to try to slow its spread, according to the state Department of Health.

Jacksonville beaches show hundreds of people walking, swimming and talking in large groups — many without face masks. Twitter users on Saturday morning called out Floridians for not taking proper precautions, as "Florida morons" trended nationwide.

Well that was predictable.

Will Jacksonville see a spike in new cases in a couple of weeks?

That remains to be seen.

It is expected that after so long of being cooped up, that when given a chance, people will flock to the beaches. Give it some time and the crowds will taper off. Also, the way the phot is taken it appears that people are closely packed. But if you look carefully, you see couples and families together, and gaps between the groups. With a nice breeze blowing, odds of transmission under those circumstances are low.

But the numbers will tell.

It is troubling that nobody has a mask on. Of course, how could you if swimming?

But the general apathy about taking this seriously will be costly. I am concerned that if things are opened back up again too soon, and people don't take it seriously enough, that we will see a second wave. There may be no national spike in numbers, but the regional numbers would tell a different story.

I'll have to hunt for information on Jacksonville statistics so we can see what their numbers are now and then check back in a few weeks.

As long as the death and suffering is confined to these cretins it would be more than fine with me. We should build a Trump wall around them.

There is no way in any shape or form that this can be considered "social distancing".

OK, I found some statistics.

Jacksonville is in Duval County, Florida.

Duval County has roughly been running about 30 new cases per day.

Florida Covid Statistics

They did reach a high of 58 new cases per day back on April 6, a few weeks after Social Distancing began, but it has not really dropped off that much since. The number of cases per day has fluctuated from 18 to 37 since that one big day tally of 58.

Looking at the graph, it really looks like Jacksonville is actually experiencing another high point in new cases over the last 4 days.

It should be interesting to watch how this turns out for them.

Jacksonville currently has 15 deaths.

Hello Cinnabar,

There is no way in any shape or form that this can be considered "social distancing".

Agreed, it is minimal at best. But if you look at the photos you can see there are actually no large groups of people standing close to one another. Don't let the appearance of crowds fool you. Look carefully at where the feet are on the sand. It's little groups, families, and the groups are spaced out as much as possible. It's just that there are so many of them it looks like one big crowd. At some point it is hard to maintain 6' from others when people are trying to walk by, that's for sure. Especially when many of these people are the apathetic types who are blowing off the mask thing.

But nobody has set up chairs or umbrellas. No coolers. Nobody hanging out. Everybody is on their feet, doing what they can to space out from one another, milling around, trying to walk the beach on their own. It's just that how can that be done with so many people all trying to do the same thing? Hopefully the novelty wears off and people are able to space out better than this.

Again, this scene was entirely predictable the first time they open it up since beach walking has not been allowed for so long. Nobody is going to show us the photo from Tuesday at 7AM. There won't be the big crowds then. That wouldn't be a sensational enough photo.

What makes you say that say that the small clusters you see are actually contained groups such as families? That would be quite an assumption.

If they're all going to die in this is a good thing to you you should be cheering them on. Chances are 99% of them will survive if they catch the Chinese virus. So what they're doing is creating immunity through antibodies. what would you say sealed up in your plastic bubble scared of everything the rest of the world will leave you behind.

If you spend all of your life being terrified of death, you never live.

The beaches should have never been closed to begin with. With 20-40 mph winds every day, I'd have a better chance at winning the lottery than I would catching Covid at a beach. Been on the beach many times in my life, never once had any strangers "close" to me. Only an idiot buys into this garbage.

Those who live in Iglooland and concrete jungle shitholes need to stick to expertise in those venues. Anyone who's ever been on a beach knows I speak the truth.

With all due respect, there is no need to wear a mask in the open air with so much ventilation, especially on a beach with lots of wind.

I guess we're going to see exactly who was right. trump, or Fauci

Great. What about sharing joints/drinks, or towels, etc? Even handing someone a beer from a cooler will spread the bacteria if it's present.

They will infect others who do not choose to be infected and in turn those folks will infect others. There is even evidence that a percentage of infected are able to get re-infected so your parroting the talking points is not on the side of science. Tell me...how well did socializing work out with Polio prior to the vaccine? But no one is stopping you from mingling in gatherings such as this as long as you keep the hell away from populations where smart folks are taking precautions.

just like people do every year with the flu and tens of thousands of people die from it every year.

If you don't quarantine every flu season you are a hypocrite.

just like every year with the flu so science is suspended for the flu so you don't have to be quarantined during flu season.

Smart for the first time in years. Because every flu season people get infected with that and die. do you quarantine every flu season if you don't you are a hypocrite and you are not smart.

How do you know? These people are trumpkins. They think this is all a hoax.

The beaches should have never been closed.

There is less ventilation and more people packed into a Publix than in the 30 mph winds on a wide beach. It's utterly ridiculous. Just another power play.

Well, this science experiment will soon show who's correct here.
