I agree there is a slippery slope danger. The failsafe between a statue and a book is pretty clear, however. It's the difference between making an appointment and having authority rub your nose in it
A statue of Hitler in town square versus buying Mein Kampf to read. Must I stay indoors to avoid an offensive statue? I can easily avoid that book and still have a life.
In reality when there is a statue people who go by it often don't even notice it let alone think about what it depicts. It's like me and the confederate flag, I have been around them all my life and all they remind me of when I see one is the south. Slavery doesn't even enter the picture. But then I'm not black so I see things differently.
