It was a war of attrition where the Vietnamese and Chinese had millions to spare and Americans were tired of seeing their fathers, brothers and sons come home in a box. The Tet Offensive had been raging all during the election year. LBJ announced he wouldn't run for reelection making the election a free-for-all. With Americans tired of the Vietnam war and the protests at home, a Republican President was virtually a shoe-in.
