It's still a hostile world and to minimize the violence and suffering, I think it's important for the US to remain engaged with it and our allies. This is one topic that puts me at odds with most Libertarians.

A fact proved repeatedly by history is that revolutions and the collapsing of nations brings on chaos and anarchy. That is often soon followed by despotism and tyranny. The US, by comparison was very lucky. The French and Russians not so much.

By being involved, the US and other nations can help a collapsing country minimize loss of life and suffering and help them rejoin the world in a peaceful manner.

It’s the same military that told us we were winning in Afghanistan. I’m afraid I don’t trust our military to be absolutely honest with us.

Be careful about conflating what a military general says and what a civilian DOD appointee says. Generals and Admirals have to be political because their bosses are political. What makes a great general like Powell, Kelly and Mattis is that they can straddle both the political and military worlds.

FWIW, I'd take any General or Admiral's word over a politician any day of the week.
