The statue of a Confederate soldier, flanked by a cannon and ammunition, has stood at the county courthouse in Charlottesville, Virginia, since 1909, more than 40 years after the Civil War.

It was christened "At Ready," and the statue's installation during Jim Crow sent a signal to many that resounded for decades -- in a city that renewed its association with deadly racial violence in 2017.
Saturday, the statue is coming down.

The Albemarle County Commission is live streaming the removal on Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube.

"President Trump on Tuesday seemed to speak out against moves being taken by many cities and states to remove statues and monuments honoring the Confederacy, calling on the country to “build upon our heritage, not tear it down.”

They tearing/taking down these statues, all over the country, they should have never been erected in the first place?!!

I have to laugh at all the predictable comments about 'erasing history.'

History is well preserved. We don't need no stinking statues to capture history.

If history were to be correctly depicted, it would be a statue of Lee surrendering. The South LOST.

Sad, sad news. It is impossible to learn from your past if you keep destroying vestiges OF that past. Just tragic.:|
 
One article I read said the statue is being offered for relocation.

That explains why they are taking such care not to damage it during removal.

I was watching all the effort being taken to remove it and wondering why they didn't just use some heavy equipment and knock it over. So that explains it.

I think it is appropriate if they wanted to relocate it to a museum or cemetery or something.

It just does not belong on public property where everyone has to see it whether they appreciate it or not.

All of these confederate statues depict the South like it was some kind of great victor. No, that's not the history. The South LOST.

These statues are distorting history.

It's a good thing to see them removed.

Every single one of them.
