So my wife's company announced huge layoffs today... We are just waiting to see if we get the ax!

Its a recession when you neighbor gets laid off. A depression when you get laid off.

Good luck.

Its not for sure yet, but if she gets it, it will hurt. She brings in more than a third of our income and all of our health insurance.

Here is what I have done. I payed my mortgage forward a few months. That serves as a nest egg and will actually go much further then you may think when you factor in Unemployment. I would get 575 a week in unemployment. Adding that with savings on daycare and mortgage paid ahead It would last me about 9-12months. If I cant get some work in that period of time there is something wrong with me.

Also in the work place they offered a VSP to older employees. I caught wind that a key guy is going to take it and I went to my boss and offered my hand to help out at no additional cost and take on his responsibilities. Few days latter when he told management hes taking the VSP they had me in to take me up on my offer.

Job protection and learning new skills (lol a financial analyst learning learn how to be a publisher) is the name of the game right now.

in terms of insurance if you have benefits available in your job and your wife is laid off that constitutes a life changing event and you would be able to pick up your plan. If you dont have a plan available I am willing to bet that you can buy private insurance way cheaper then the cobra you would get.
