Time To Recognize Who We Are; Reunite America

Hello Dutch Uncle,

It'd be better to most most toxic industries into space. Why do you think more isn't being done to put mankind into space and on the Moon for industrial purposes and mining?

Cost prohibitive.

No for-profit space industry is making a profit.

Hello Dutch Uncle,

That depends on the GA Senate vote on Jan 5.

Clearly something needs to be done. We have too many gun deaths.

I don't know. Maybe you don't think it's a problem or you think it's simply unavaoidable.

We should not accept this amount of gun deaths without wanting to do something.

What's the solution?
I think it's a problem Democrat lie about "gun violence" by padding and doubling their numbers with suicides.

Hello Dutch Uncle,

So nothing need be done? We simply accept the gun deaths as inevitable? The occasional gun-nut massacre is to be expected?

No. I can't do that. I think we need to improve.

Better mental health care. Remove the stigma from mental illness. Consider this; A person has a small bout of depression because their parents died then, after a month of treatment they're all better. They apply for a new job and the application includes questions about mental illness. Do you think employers would be more inclined or less inclined to hire a "nut job"?

Why do you think suicide is higher in the military than non-military professions? Higher stress, yes, but there are plenty of high stress non-military jobs. It's because if a person turns themselves in for treatment, they might as well have "nut job" tattooed on their foreheads. In the military, it's up or out. There are no career corporals or 1st Lieutenants. Additionally, there's no 401k. No pension before 20 years. All of the vets on this forum who didn't do at least 20 years (occasionally, an early out package) get nothing for retirement, even if it was 19 years, 11 months and less than a month. In order to avoid the stigma of mental illness, they hold it in until they kill themselves.

Mental illness is also associated with another killer: violent domestic disputes. You certainly know abusers grew up with abuse. How to break the cycle? Sterner sentences for abuse just so they can learn more abuse in prison? Wouldn't mental health care be the better solution, at least for the most part?

Hello Dutch Uncle,

Not a good example.

Lotta people would have lived better lives if he had stayed home.

He brought massive death to the new world.

Have you considered how many would have died or never been born if he hadn't? Besides, it's bound to have happened one way or another. The Vikings have visited before and there's evidence Polynesians made the trip. It was only a matter of time before civilizations on different continents met.

The 20 years thing is interesting. Sounds like a change is needed there, if that is leading to suicides and people just 'bucking up and stuffing it in.' A proportional military retirement based on any time served is in order.

Mental health is the only issue? So where is the big Republican initiative to tax gun owners and the gun industry to pay for better mental health care?

How about a deal between proponents and opponents of gun rights.

Since the mental health issue is not currently resolved, tighten restrictions on gun ownership until it is. Once that is done, and it can be assured that guns are only in the hands of responsible owners, then the restrictions can be safely lifted.

It is irrelevant. We can't go back and change history. And no, the Polynesians never visited America. It was the other way around as Thor Heyerdhal proved with his Kon Tiki voyage. The Polynesians are descendant from South Americans.

The "20 years thing" has been like that far longer than I've been alive. The fact most people don't understand it is classic example of them not giving a shit. Democrat have commented to me numerous times about military deaths or permanent maimings with "They volunteered. They knew what they were getting into".

When have Democrats ever put better mental healthcare over banning and more restrictions? Never. Obama added it as an afterthought when his first gun bill failed to pass the House(?). It was in the bill that made the Senate.....waaaayyyyy down at the bottom. Well below banning AK-47s and high capacity magazines.

You brought it up. ;) I was simply pointing out the the exploration of space is as important to the human race as the exploration of our own planet.

There's also this point to consider: the Human Race is only one impact event, one Supervolcano or one super plague away from total extinction. Getting off this planet is an evolutionary step of survival.

The mental health approach to reducing gun violence is more than a matter of simply agreeing to it. It has to get paid for.

That is why I proposed a compromise.

Each side gives up something to unite around a Republican idea.

Since it is a Republican idea, Democrats give up less, because after all, it is a Republican approach being pursued.

Democrats give up on permanent restrictions.

Republicans agree to taxation of the gun industry to pay for the mental health care.

I am a Democrat and I am reaching out to my fellow Republican Americans, appealing to you to share mutual respect.

Let us keep the lines if civility open so that we can discuss what's going on in our nation and see what we can agree on to move forward.

I am also reaching out to my fellow Americans on the left to accept that we live in a very divided America, that hatred and animosity should not be shown to our fellow Americans.

We are all in this together.

We must find our way forward together.

We have to stop fighting so we can have meaningful discussion of the important issues we have to try to resolve somehow.

Our challenge is to find a way to agree on the basic facts.

If we don't even agree on the facts, we can never decide what needs to be done about them.

y'all have been lying for four straight years. go fuck yourself.

I support space exploration.

But we can't pursue that very well while we are at each other's throats.

The parties need to kiss and make up so we can move on to more important things.

If only the political parties had parents in the front seat who could turn around and say: "You two will stop fighting, smile nicely at one another, and sit quietly as you enjoy the trip; or we are stopping the car to spend unplanned time resolving this before we get back into the car and finish the trip, thus making this ride even longer, further delaying our arrival and dinner."

Soooooo, IF the Republicans don't agree to taxing the gun industry, no mental health care? Just tell the ~ 50,000 Americans who commit suicide every year "Suck it up, bitches!"?

Democrats are focused on gun violence as being equal to the number of guns on the streets. By their logic, less guns, less violence. As the stats prove, not to mention Robin Williams, Anthony Bourdain and Kate Spades*, you don't need a gun to commit suicide.

Democrats think banning guns is more important than mental health. Expect nothing to change.

https://afsp.org/suicide-statistics/

https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/fastats/suicide.htm

https://www.nimh.nih.gov/health/statistics/major-depression.shtml
An estimated 17.3 million adults in the United States had at least one major depressive episode. This number represented 7.1% of all U.S. adults.
  • The prevalence of major depressive episode was higher among adult females (8.7%) compared to males (5.3%).
  • The prevalence of adults with a major depressive episode was highest among individuals aged 18-25 (13.1%).
  • The prevalence of major depressive episode was highest among adults reporting two or races (11.3%).

*as the CDC data proves, "suffocation suicides" are America's #2 means of suicide. Will Democrats seek to ban ties and shoelaces after guns? Or will they smarten up and realize mental healthcare is a severely underrated health problem in America?
